It didn't age well ^^

You jinxed everything.
Mostly positive now at 9811, so even with the Chinese insurrection. It's still good tbh. If people start browse the bad reviews and see a bunch of Chinese demanding localization as source of a bad review. Bells should be ringing for obvious reasons..

At this point Steam should alter the score of Subverse by not counting these chinese reviews. Best example of "off-topic activity". No matter what do I think about the devs, letting these people as they please will only show them they can bombard any game without consequences. Idk if Steam does it on it's own or if Studio FOW must contact Steam to apply this filter, but something should be done about it.

Unless they were promised chinese translation in EA, bought the game just for that and Studio FOW went like "sorry, no chinese language until game is finished". Then they have right to be angry.

Apparently they got some mechanic in place after the review bombing than happened back with Metro Exodus. Those Chinese doesn't seem to be the most upset about localization being simplified, or traditional Chinese, but that they are not acknowledged as MAINLAND Chinese... SFOW like... we don't see any traffic (statistics) from mainland China, which kinda obvious as they hide behind vpns. They want special treatment for being mainland Chinese...

At the end of the day they’re a small team, so they can’t afford to be developing and translating at the same time, no matter how popular the demographic is.

also as much as they’re claiming they did the majority of the campaign, stats say otherwise

Anyway back to talking about cool shit. DEVA mode. Wonder if it’ll get a sailor moon or dbz esque transformation sequence

Bro they got £1,668,626 from Kickstarter alone. Pretty sure they can afford paying for more developers, if they are a "small team" then it is by choice.
They did hire more people, but there is a limit you know. You look at that number and think its a fucking lot. It's not when you consider wages, production costs else etc. People doesn't work for free you know..

Looks like the mods on steam started to wield some big hammers and went on a rampage :ROFLMAO: (either that or the Chinese went to bed...)

Honestly, it feels like StudioFow should have made Subverse's gameplay similar to Detroit: Become Human (interactive movie). Would've played their strenghts better (animations, voice acting, fun plot, etc.)
At least for a first game. Until they have enough experience to try other more complex genres.
Detroit Become Human had a development budget of 30 million Euro... also...

Detroit: Become Human was worked on by the 180 staff members at Quantic Dream and also outsourced to the Philippines, China, Vietnam, and India. The game has 35,000 camera shots, 74,000 unique animations, and 5.1 million lines of code.

and it still kinda sucked.. meeeh.

I'm saying that the gameplay they chose wasn't the best for their current experience in making actual games.
If you like shoot em up and tactical grid comabt, the gamplay is fine enough. If you hate such gameplay it's not. Just as people dislike fps, rpg's , or whatever. Not everyone can like the same things.

Which is…0. So what should they have started with? They picked a simple form of tactical grid combat with basic SHMUP gameplay. Both of which, despite their simplicity, many players have found to be fun or challenging.

If Gradius and FF Tactics are too complex, then what?

Focus on your strenghts and don't mislead the public.
Easy.
so they took their strengths, making quality smut films and combined it with hiring experienced game devs to make an actual game with quality smut and…

also if anyone was misled it’s probably cuz they read something calling it the XCOM/Mass Effect of adult games and overhyped themselves without looking into what the game was gonna be.

The animations are good but not well implemented into the actual game.
The combat is repetitive and get's boring really fast.

Just take a look at the reviews here, people are not satisfied with the game. It is lacking content and gameplay quality.
And I’d balance that against the people that are happy with it, be it on steam or discord, and say the negative are very much in the minority.

Whether the people who criticize the game are a minority or not is besides the point, it is moot to the discussion.

It doesn't change the fact that from a game design point of view (and even by adult game standards) Subverse is at best an underwhelming game with many flaws, given the budget and overall production quality.

Most people are simple creatures; you need only see what is popular across different media such as music, games, television, etc to realize that just because the majority of people like something, it doesn't make that something good or above criticism. Nothing is perfect of course and everything has haters and critics who most of the time are a very small minority.

But the point is that even Subverse's the critics are a minority, it is definitely a much more sizeable minority than usual for a piece of media (in a percentage), which in itself speaks volumes and is a testament to the game's design failings, regardless if the majority of people liked the game, because as we established, most people have simple needs and don't have enough knowledge to know when something is flawed.

The conclusion is that the majority of sfow's audience were of people who are into adult videos, and not adult games, so if Subverse happens to be one of your first adult games that you played then it will surely seem like an impressive thing, because the presentation is great. But for people who have more experience with adult games in general, then the sub-par execution is more clear, which consequently generate the displease seen here.
