Dev Update #155

First of all, I have to thank everyone for their support and their encouragement. I'm done with the fever and most likely with Covid. I'm still coughing a lot but according to the test I took, I'm now covid free. And I, indeed feel way better.

Now onto the dev Update!
The new sets and characters I'll need for the new content coming with v0.6.3 are finished. I could spend more time on these but they're good enough for what I'll use them for.
However. That new content will have to wait for a bit as I finally decided to first rework Day One. Let's talk about that for a bit.
I made no mystery that I'm planning on reworking the first five days of the story.

Essentially, I want to rework the renders.
My style evolved and the quality of the images I produce has improved a lot since I started working on Summer Scent. I think I reached a stable point that I can use as a standard for future work. For Summer Scent to be a decent and viable product, I have to bring the early chapters up to that level of quality.
There are also a lot of technical problems to rectify, like shaders misbehaving, or lights going haywire. Cassie's eyes in the early chapters are a good example of that.
And finally, I changed sets on Day Six. It was a weird decision, but I still think that was for the better. Even if I have to unify everything now.
For all these reasons, I'll have to repose and rerender every image of the first five days of the story.
That's about 2200 renders and that will take a lot of time even if I don't have to completely restart from scratch but rather transpose to a new standard. As I don't want to pause the development of new content for too long, I will mix the rework with the new content, a few scenes at a time.
For most of the scenes, the rework will only be about reworking the renders.

But there are obviously a few exceptions.
There is THAT scene that needs a heavy rewrite. Everyone knows which one I'm talking about: the first scene of Day Two, in the kitchen. It's an essential scene and it's also a total mess. I have to rework that.

And there's Day One.
Day One is very short. About 5500 words, for 64 renders. I am very ashamed of it as it fails in about every way. It needs the global rerendering and it needs a bit of rewrite. I need to better the presentation of the characters, make Jack's egocentrism a little bit more obvious, and add a few renders to improve the render per word ratio... And that dream sequence has to disappear. I'm going to change it for something more interesting than the ugly mistake it is now.
It won't change anything to the story but will be a better starting point to the story and make a few things more understandable.

So here I am, reworking Day One.
I reviewed and rewrote about 70% of it already. I feel like the things I'm adding or rephrasing are already making a big difference in the way you perceive the characters and I'm pretty happy about it. So far the script has grown by about 20 %.
I think I'll be done with the rewrite by next Wednesday. I'll then decide what I'll do for the renders. I have 60 of those to rerender but I will definitely add some more. I'm not going to reach for a 1/30 render per word ratio like in Day Six, but a hundred more renders can't hurt. I'll see when I'll be done with the script.
I should be done with the rework of Day One by the end of August. I will, of course, keep you updated about my progress.

Anyway, I'm fully back to work.

Thank you for your support!

On the Dual Path, on Early Day 5, Jack had his pants on on the bed with Eve, and I chose Tell You Everything, Choose No One, Apologize, but Cassie still leave and I still got the Bad End.

Is it buggy on the latest update and auto-defaulted to Bad End?

I don't think I messed up anywhere (I meet with Kelly though (but I told the girls I'm meeting Kelly)

You probably missed some affection points.
Meeting Kelly doesn't impact that path.

Does the Eve Sub Love + Cassie Dom always evolved into Dual Sub?
No. If you don't show Cassie any affection, it just closes the dom path.

Dev could you at least finish day 6 before you rework the renders I've been longing for a dual dom climax for ages

I should be done with day one in a couple of weeks. Afterthat I'm going back to working on the new content. In the future, the rework will be done scene by scene and mixed with the new content. I promise it will go smoothly.

Dev Update #158

Day one, Scene two.
It's done. It took me more time than I expected. I expected the car shots to be a problem but in the end, they weren't such a hindrance. But I accumulated some rookie mistakes that I had to correct, on multiple files. Which is always a huge waste of time.
Anyway, that was the biggest scene of the rework and it's fully posed. I still haven't rendered anything but the previews are pretty good.
I should be able to start rendering all night long by the middle of next week.

I'll start working on scene 3 on Monday morning.
I hope I'll be able to rework scenes 3, 4, 5 and maybe a part of scene 6 next week. Scene 3 is ridiculously short, even after the rewrite with only 8 renders to take care of, scene 4 and 5 are 25 and 22 renders long.
That should be feasible.

Dev Update #159

I couldn't work as much as I wanted this week. I've lost a lot of time with health problems (allergies, my eyes were on fire) and other events beyond my control. But I'm doing better now and I should be able to make some more significant progress.

Scenes 3 and 4 are posed.
Scene 3 was very short and barely worth mentioning.
Scene 4 is the living room sequence, between Jack and Cassie. The scene starts with Jack watching the TV. I had to produce some fantasy-oriented renders to display on the screen. In the original shots, I used some screenshots from a very popular TV Show, and that kind of thing is a no go if I ever want to publish on Steam.
Scene 4 mainly serves as a "proper" introduction for Cassie. The original scene contained a vertical pan shot. I removed it and replaced it with a few detailed shots that are way more efficient in presenting Cassie and showing the character.
Eve also had that kind of vertical pan shot in the very first scene of the game. I removed it too.

I'm a few shots into scene 5.
It's a "phone call" scene. That means very little action. The challenge is to find enough variation and/or second degree narration elements to make the 20 renders planned interesting. I'll probably rely on external elements for a few shots.

I'm about twenty shots late on the posing. I hope I'll be more productive next week.

This seems like a good opportunity for some cross-promotion: ask one of the GOT porn parody games (or, if even more worried about potential copyright objections, one of the GOT-inspired generic fantasy games) to use one of their screenshots.

I doubt anyone would be interested in that kind of promotion. It's really just three shots and I need them to fit a specific description. I could probably use materials from other games, with proper authorisations, but twisting its context to fit my needs wouldn't be right.

However, it's something I'll keep in mind for the future.

Dev Update #160

Scenes 5 and 6 are posed. I'm a few shots into scene 7.
I'm currently reworking the night light. I thought I was done with it a few months ago, when I reworked most of the sets, but today, as I needed to use it, I wasn't satisfied with the results. It's probably not the last time I have to rethink the way I light dark and night scenes. The idea to put enough light in the night so that you can actually see things is self-contradictory and I'm afraid you can't actually get a satisfying result without letting go of realism. I have to find something though. And fast.
Back to rendering.
Temperatures are getting reasonable in my area and I can finally consistently render at night. I'm satisfied with the images I rendered so far. The difference with my original renders is so big that it feels a bit like a different game.
Next week.
I began posing scene 7 and I hope to be done with it by Wednesday. I will then jump onto scene 8. It's the dream sequence. In the original Day One, it's pretty much a total failure and I've already rewritten it from scratch. I was happy with what I came up with but I might rewrite it once again before posing it. I have new ideas that would make "more sense" and would be better from a narrative standpoint. I'm considering my options.

Reworking day one took longer than I expected. I thought I could reuse my old files and just swap characters and sets but in the end, it's just impossible. I have to fully repose most of the shots, to avoid horrendous loading time and problems with imported environment lights and HDRI. However, I have no doubt that it's worth it.

Well, thanks, but really, these development updates are just the basics of trust and politeness. You can't expect to get support if you don't let people know what you are doing.

Dev Update #161

Scene 7 is posed.
No surprises there. I finished working on scene 7 on Wednesday morning. It's fully posed and rendering has even begun.

I rewrote scene 8.
That dream sequence proved more difficult to handle than I expected. I thought I should do something like the Day Six dream but after a first draft, I realized that it would not work. The dream sequence on Day Six works because it happens at a point that can justify the emotional load that comes with it. A dream sequence right at the start of the game needed to be different. I need something simple and non-sensical. Something fun. So I rewrote it a fourth time. And I think it's a good one.
It's barely longer than my previous rewrite and the cut and the render count will be identical. I posed the first shots. My previews look ok. I hope the renders will be good too. I hope to be completely done with it by next Wednesday.

Rendering is going on.
I've been rendering every night of the last week. I'll probably finish rendering scene 7 tonight. I'll need one more night to render scene 8 in the middle of next week and we should be good on that front.

I'm late!
I'm about two weeks late on my estimations and I won't be able to release it before the end of the month. Everything should be posed and hopefully rendered by Thursday, I'll start coding as soon as I'm done with posing scene 8. I'll need maybe a full day to post-process all the files. Then a few days of beta testing. At least some proofreading...
We can reasonably hope for a release in the second week of October. Maybe a bit sooner. We'll see.
I won't include any music in this version. It's something I have to postpone again. The music situation has become a bit stressful. Because I have to choose it right (and that's not easy), and because some other AVN devs recently encountered some licensing problems and it's something that I have to take into account.

I'm late!
Remember:
“She was around ten minutes late, as a matter of fact. I didn't give a damn, though. All that crap they have in cartoons in the Saturday Evening Post and all, showing guys on street corners looking sore as hell because their dates are late - that's bunk. If a girl looks swell when she meets you, who gives a damn if she's late? Nobody.”
