So, over half-way into the game, I really didn't understand why everyone was upset about the lack of choices. I mean, yeah, there were fewer choices than in other similar games (Sisterly Perverter being the gold standard in that respect, imo), but I thought it was fine overall. And then I reached the end of the game.

I think the real problem is that the choices you do have aren't that meaningful (spoilers from here own out, so be warned). No matter what the MC does, the harebrained idea of posting porn videos will happen, Emma will find out about the MC and his mother, and, in the end, the MC will get screwed over. And I think it's particularly frustrating because the quality of the writing fluctuates. To be honest, I got a bit of a GoT flashback toward the end, as seemingly situations were contrived to bring about the concluding conflict. So, a mother and her son go on an overnight trip, and the first her husband thinks when he finds out she's not been truthful about where she went is "Oh shit, she's cheating on me!" How does that make sense? Even more silly is the fact that the bigger fight between them happens over condoms. Seriously? The best she can come up with is "Oh yeah, I've been having male prostitutes coming in here"? He is there during the night, so presumably she'd have all these people coming around in broad daylight, with both children around the house? Would it really be that hard for her to go "They're ours, dumbass" and then storm out? You could easily have and ending where Mia and the MC end on good terms. Mia and Emma are over (that situation can easily be achieved in a million other ways, given all she's done in the course of the game), so obviously her only source of income has run dry, the only choice is for her to take up her aunt's offer, "but you can still visit" and well... it's a bit of a "if you love her let her go" type of situation. We pick up in the next game after two years and they've obviously drifted apart.

There, now we have a positive and a negative ending. And it feels like the player's choices impact the story...

This game is more of a kinetic novel than a choice based game and there's absolutely no problem with that. The choices are there for some scene variations and nothing more. Honestly I never understood why that's a problem for some people, I mean, not every game needs to have those huge branching storylines.

I haven't been around that long, but apparently the current writer of the sequel took over somewhere around the second half of the game and I think the quality of the writing went up considerably. The drama in the second half really helped elevate the game among it's peers imo. If there was no real conflict it would just be another boring and straightforward incest game.

Admittedly it's been a while since I played this game, but if I remember correctly it was established that Emma and the dad weren't really having sex anymore, whether that was because of the meds or they just fallen out of love with each other I really don't remember. So the condoms were a red flag for sure. Same goes for her lying about the trip, I mean why on earth would she lie about it if there wasn't something fishy going on?

As for the ending I think the letter perfectly sums up why their relationship couldn't have worked at that time. As Mia said in the letter if she ended up staying a bit longer the MC would have been able to convince her to stay and that means nothing would have changed for the better. The MC would have probably continued being a mindless horndog and Mia would have ended up being a whore. Also, the reason Mia left was because of the MC and not because of the lack of money. I mean, she could have easily found work in the city if she wanted to, there's no reason to leave because of that. I think the ending paved the way for the next game perfectly, and I don't think Mia departing on good terms would have made for a good sequel, but maybe that's just me. There's a huge difference between them just drifting apart because of the distance, and Mia abruptly disappearing and leaving the MC in a limbo and them not talking for two years because of that. Their whole dynamic would be different, not to mention the awkwardness, the uncertainty of their feelings and the sexual tension - all of which the sequel nails in my opinion.
