Sandboxes don't have to be directionless. Superpowered, for example, starts as a sandbox that offers an initial direction (graduate or get reclaimed! gain more superpowers!). The pixie chain does interfere with the sandbox because of how it is constructed and intertwines nonsensically with those goals. Sandboxes just require allowing the player to make meaningful choices. Sandboxes can degenerate into "rowboat in the middle of the ocean" play where the player is making their choices blindly and seemingly without impact. Establishing external goals can help the player have initial direction and gauge progress.exact definition for "sandbox" tag i suppose.

Loser looks like a decent game for those that like it. The art is crisper which is not surprising because tech has changed in the 5 years since Superpowered has been under development. I'm sure working with the new platform is a breath of fresh air for the dev.
