I think the best way is to finish the game all at once without updating, and put out a demo for people to test, if there are any bugs and so on.Once this game is close to finish, I will definitely suggest to him his next game he should just do a GoFundMe or Kickstarter to fund his entire game instead of the monthly subscription. If there isn't a monthly requirement, then hopefully he can have the balance between money and passion. He should has enough reputation by then to have enough people pay upfront.
That's what I think and I think it's better this way than there are few things per month, if he wants a long game like Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece and these games that have a tremendously large universe, it has to be complete, since the monthly fee would have many complaints due to having many fans of these animes.
