Unreal is an objectively great tool. If other people can't use it, that's on them. I know you were talking about specific games, and I understand where you're coming from, but I want to double down on the fact that Unreal itself is not the problem.
Ren'py is a specialised toolkit for building a particular kind of game. It's easy to learn, incredibly well-tested and stable, gives you a metric fuck-tonne of functionality for free, and if you stick to the kind of game Ren'py wants to make, it will make your life incredibly easy. But the further you move away from the kind of game Ren'py wants you to make, the more you're going to be fighting the tool instead of using it.

Unreal/Unity/etc. are general tools for building almost any game you can think of. You can make anything you want in them, if you're willing to put in the time and effort, but at the cost of having to build for yourself almost all the stuff you'd get for free in a more specialized tool. (There are VN frameworks available for these engines, but none are as mature, stable or feature-complete as Ren'py.)

Which means developers moving to a "real" game engine find themselves having to spend valuable time reimplementing things that players of this kind of game just expect to work out of the box, like a reliable save system, rollback, navigation, preferences for text speed, dialogue skipping, not just crashing randomly, and so on. Every developer wants to reinvent the wheel, because all the existing wheels are shit and yours is going to be ten times better, but making a new wheel is hard and takes time.

Given the number one killer of games, adult or mainstream, indie or big studio, is just having too much shit you need to do and not enough time or people to do it, this is a great way to shoot yourself in the foot as a developer.

Adding to it, Ren'Py is lighter, easier to port etc. There are many advantages. Whenever I play a VN coded in Unity and I see it could very well be made on Ren'Py I just imagine how much time the dev team could have saved just using a more practical tool. If your game is - for instance - a FPP, with NPCs running around, permanent environment destruction and other crazy stuff, yeah, go for a more advanced engine. But if your game boils down to a slideshow sandbox with cinematics thrown in here and there, using the more convenient engine isn't shameful - it's the smart move.
