Funny thing though
An update is actually information. A content release or content update has been shortened to simply the one word "update" but that actually is inaccurate. Since it has quite a long, long history of meaning a dissemination of new information or understandings of an existing topic or discussion. So with something akin to games (VNs are grouped with them) they are like alpha and beta "releases" adding to an existing project. Content updates similar to software updates or upgrades work but only if you have the understanding of how they are different than the generic word on it's own, update.
That is why the rules about abandoned tags talk about updates and a time frame and another separate timeframe for content released.
So ultimately, by and large, updates are not what we mean and are misunderstood and from a certain view frequently ignored in spite of their existence.
