patreon is close to charity though. you patron so that the creator can "create on their own term". that's written on patreon's own front page.I dont like that attitude as it contradicts the common sense: You pay money with the mindset that it will be used in a certain way. What you expect on patreon is a developer working on the game. Yes there are people that dont have that expectation, but the majority surely does. So taking money from patreon while you are not working on the game feels like theft no matter what bullshit patreon writes into there tos.
Your perspective is of course valid aswell. But what you describe is general charity and you would be an idiot to use patreon for that as they take a huge ammount from it. Another problem with it is that you are fine with other people being scammed. And no, the argument "they can cancel there payments anytime" isnt valid for aslong as the developer isnt transparent with wether he is actively working on the game or not.
So to summarize it: a paused patreon isnt a lose-lose situation. It is a lose-win situation. The devs loses money and the patreons win money to spent on other things. To call it a loss because less income for the developer will maybe lessen the motivation to work on the game again is pure bullshit, as the developer didnt have this motivation while he still had a higher income due to a much higher supporter base. It is also not a loss because it is a sign that people reward active developers and that will lead to more games being made. It does harm developers in general if limited money on the market is spent for games not being made.
You don't really pay money in exchange of products on patreon (that's kickstarter). You pay cuz you wanna give the creator some $ their way.
When you patron, it's an automatic subscription for what is usually a small amount of $, so either you subscribed once and then checked out cuz life gets in the way, or you subscribed and pay real close attention to the creator you supported, and then cancel your subscription after a month or two because you don't like the way they are doing things.
Pausing billing does work when it's only paused for a month or so due to missed deadline and then reactivated soon. But most of the time from what i've seen here, the next update after the paused update just never comes.
There are patreon creator accounts who hasn't made progress for some time (more than a year even), that still have paid subscribers (in the hundred or thousands even)
I'm subscribing to one creator like that, not AVN. I don't remember when was the last time he published his product. It has been a while and i just checked just now and he still has thousands of paid members and his last post on patreon was 2022. I personally like their past products so i subscribed.
Patreon really is closer to charity, or an endowment, or a beer money or something on that line compared to exchanges of goods and services
Surea yeah, i don't disagree patreon subscribers can feel disappointed due to lack of patreon posts, but when that happened, they can just stop, and usually that's what people do.
