I dont like that attitude as it contradicts the common sense: You pay money with the mindset that it will be used in a certain way. What you expect on patreon is a developer working on the game. Yes there are people that dont have that expectation, but the majority surely does. So taking money from patreon while you are not working on the game feels like theft no matter what bullshit patreon writes into there tos.

Your perspective is of course valid aswell. But what you describe is general charity and you would be an idiot to use patreon for that as they take a huge ammount from it. Another problem with it is that you are fine with other people being scammed. And no, the argument "they can cancel there payments anytime" isnt valid for aslong as the developer isnt transparent with wether he is actively working on the game or not.

So to summarize it: a paused patreon isnt a lose-lose situation. It is a lose-win situation. The devs loses money and the patreons win money to spent on other things. To call it a loss because less income for the developer will maybe lessen the motivation to work on the game again is pure bullshit, as the developer didnt have this motivation while he still had a higher income due to a much higher supporter base. It is also not a loss because it is a sign that people reward active developers and that will lead to more games being made. It does harm developers in general if limited money on the market is spent for games not being made.
patreon is close to charity though. you patron so that the creator can "create on their own term". that's written on patreon's own front page.
You don't really pay money in exchange of products on patreon (that's kickstarter). You pay cuz you wanna give the creator some $ their way.

When you patron, it's an automatic subscription for what is usually a small amount of $, so either you subscribed once and then checked out cuz life gets in the way, or you subscribed and pay real close attention to the creator you supported, and then cancel your subscription after a month or two because you don't like the way they are doing things.

Pausing billing does work when it's only paused for a month or so due to missed deadline and then reactivated soon. But most of the time from what i've seen here, the next update after the paused update just never comes.

There are patreon creator accounts who hasn't made progress for some time (more than a year even), that still have paid subscribers (in the hundred or thousands even)
I'm subscribing to one creator like that, not AVN. I don't remember when was the last time he published his product. It has been a while and i just checked just now and he still has thousands of paid members and his last post on patreon was 2022. I personally like their past products so i subscribed.

Patreon really is closer to charity, or an endowment, or a beer money or something on that line compared to exchanges of goods and services

Surea yeah, i don't disagree patreon subscribers can feel disappointed due to lack of patreon posts, but when that happened, they can just stop, and usually that's what people do.

Sorry but patreon isnt even close to charity, no matter what they call themself and what they write on there site. No charity organization takes that a huge chunk of fees. And normaly charity organization just collect money from people but they dont scan the background of these peoples and decline them if they doesnt fit to there own mentality.

In the end it doesnt matter what my opinion is and what yours is. What counts is how the majority of people understand and use patreon and that is not charity.

Supporting a creator on Patreon is charity. That's all it is. Someone's making a thing you enjoy, so you give them money in return for neither partial ownership of the project, a cut of any eventual profits, or any obligation. That's tossing money into a busker's hat.

The developer can't lie about releasing updates. They either come out or they don't. If they stop, or if you're dissatisfied with the amount of content in each, you cancel your support. If you can't be bothered to do so, that's not theft, it's incompetence with managing personal finances.

The real scam is site's use of tech-sector gobbledygook to make charitable giving seem like it's some kind of investing. Though Patreon actually takes considerably less of a cut than most nonprofit charity organizations, which typically spend 80-95 cents of every dollar they receive on things like "administration".

The "Abandoned" tag on this site doesn't mean anything and it's just a system moderators of this site implements as the game uploading rules (see section 3 Prefixes).

Also, this was the dev's latest Patreon post;

For me, I still think it's definitely worth playing but in the end, it's up to you whether you decide to try it or not.
Actually it does mean something it tells us that the dev has not been communicating on this site or any of their own sites to keep us informed if they are working on their VN or not which more then likely means they are not.

Also the dev stating that he is coming back actually doesn't mean anything because plenty of people have said they are going to do something and not follow thru with it.

He took a break 2 years ago and never came back.
Don't try to explain anything to these lunatics. Even if Dev will release a video, where he straightly says that he abandoned the game and just continued to milk/scum gullible losers for easy cash, they still will live in their childish little world of delusions, denying reality as hard as they can, building theories, looking for hidden message etc.

Haha the patreon "about you"-faq is so horribly outdated

Q. Is the game free?
A. Yes. First, it goes through the tier list and thereafter it is free for the public.
Its not even allowed to be a free game anymore considering it on steam or am i wrong? :ROFLMAO:

This part is kind of funny too:

Q. How long does an update take?
A. Sadly, it is an impossible thing to give an estimation on. This is my hobby and real life can tend to take priority when needed. Under 3-4 months is what would be realistic. 3 is the goal.
But I have had updates taken a lot more. That I want to improve, but alas, it can tend to happen. Hopefully in the future I am in a comfortable enough spot to go full time on this project! But for now- there is no guarantee for monthly or even bi-monthly releases.
Yeah well, i love this avn but i have lost any hope that this will be finished. Granted i only sub in update months anyway but this wont get any support from me anymore until he maybe releases 2 or 3 good updates in a row with good development speed.

But i simply cant imagine that happening anymore at this point. His rare messages on patreon are very disheartening too, they imo (!) lack respect towards his patreons, he didnt even said sorry about being absent without any notice.

And while there are avns im able to enjoy while knowing/suspecting they will never see the finish line, this avn is so story centric that not concluding the story just damages the whole avn in retrospect and makes the story worthless.

sadly alot of games that go to steam seem to die here
A lot of these games get leaked by the devs to get a loyal fanbase before moving to Steam. But unfortunately Steam has some stringent rules on developers posting their work on piracy sites. So unless someone is willing to share a copy, the devs aren't legally allowed to post updated versions.

But in the case of this game, the writing was on the wall since 2021. Progress had been crawling forward at a snail's pace and the story only had two real major progressions since then.

It's been circa 2 years since the last meaningful update.
Wait for another couple of years, might have something by then - or probably not, but here's wishful thinking hoping. :ROFLMAO:
Welcome back. It has been to long for the update and your last appearance. Coincidence? Yep :)

Another one bites the dust. What a shame...
Not dead. But the tag won't go away until there is an update. Disappointed Hopes hasn't shown up here in a long time, but with the state of the game don't think we will see him until after the update either. Of course no one knows when that will be so more of a coma than death.
