You are right in that the MC isn't someone bland that you can self-insert over easily. If that's what your looking for in your porn games this game might not be for you. But to me it sounds like you make the writing out to be the problem when it just doesn't fit your taste. Because in my humble opinion the writing in The Intoxicating Flavor stands above a vast majority of the games on this site.
You said it all !!(y)

I apologize for adding more after all the previous answers to your post. But I feel like I see the source of your misunderstanding of the Main Character character.

Before coming to the island, the MC arc needs to be divided into 4 phases:
1. Preparation Eva forms MC according to Innan's needs)
2. Rebellion (MC in response to 1 phase running away from the home and go on path of self-harm)
3. Rectification (Liv and her sister help MC find a new way to live)
4. We know the least, only that it start with the scene with Tegean and MC ended up on the island and that he hates himself for it.
Phase 5 is then what we forms MC in on the island.

And yes, during phase 2, MC is probably a real asshole, but can we be surprised at what we know about phase 1?
Where a rich mother had money and influence, she obviously did not give MC the basic things we expect from mothers. MC get to feel many of these things only during phase 3.
And while in phase 4, MC is a grumbler who suffers from self-loath and looks at himself through the optics of phase 2 (just like you), in his behavior I see a significant difference from thoughts and words. Or have you not noticed how he helps his female fellow islander against "his will"?

You didn't write the story? Who did? Perhaps I should talk with them.

The MC behaves, talks, and acts like a self absorbed jerk throughout the game. It is not one specific event. He is also generally unlikeable (to me at least). He lacks maturity and often empathy for others. He only seems to show empathy towards the girls on the island on occasion. That is why he is a loser. I could spend eight hours playing the game again and copy and paste conversations and post them here but that is a lot of time to prove a point don't you think?

There are multiple conversations with characters talking about how the MC killed a bunch of people, Eve and Inanna. Eve talks about the MC killing a bunch of people and having to send him to the island to get him away from the law. Inanna asks the MC multiple times why he killed those people and he kept saying, "For no reason." The MC and Inanna agreed to answer each others questions and be honest about it. Perhaps you need to play your own game again.

You do a lot of things right in the game. I don't deny that. The renders and graphics are excellent. The story is creative and imaginative. The sex scenes are well done. The characters are unique and interesting.

I (and others) have a hard time relating to the character. Some of us are playing a main character that we can't relate to. That is never a good thing. The MC doesn't have to be a knight in shining armor. He can certainly have flaws and should. I would never choose to play this type of character in any game. That is the biggest struggle for me (and others).

Thank you for all of your hard work and efforts on this project!

Update:

I spent 10 minutes and found two quick examples of "being a jerk and a loser" in the last update.

I could easily find 50 more of these. Even if the MC isn't happy with Katie, you don't treat someone like that (at least a good person wouldn't).
You ever watch Star Wars? Han Solo was a total self-centred jerk at first. It's like you don't understand the basic concept of a character arc or something.

I'm glad we finally got some story of the redhead Teagen it feels like she had been around forever but we hadn't really explored her story yet I've always liked Liv but she grew on me, even more, when she decided to help her.

Hello everyone!

To be honest, I didn't want to write this post. Because it will again look like a complaint, and I'm tired of writing complaints. But I kind of have to keep you informed, so I humbly write this post.

About plans.
As you probably remember, at the end of last year I promised to write a post about my plans for 2021, but it so happened that on the very first day of the new year, all these plans went to the trash can. The fact is that we have holidays in Russia from January 1 to January 11, but since I spent the whole last year working on the game all the time, I have accumulated a lot of debts. So from January 2 to January 12, I sat at my official job for 12 hours and closed these debts.

So now for this year I have only one plan - I must finally decide the work or the game. If by the end of the year I cannot support myself with the help of the patreon, I will close it and go live a boring, gray, but calm life. Either I finally quit and can work on the game in full force.

About the update.
I will say right away, do not wait for version 0.7 this month. It's not even that I didn't work on the update for 11 days, I wouldn't have had time anyway. There's too much to do. This is especially true for animations. I'm planning 8 to 11 animations in this update, which is a lot of work and rendering. By the way, about the render…

Should I buy a 3090?
I made an animation this weekend and put it on render this morning. What was my surprise when I realized that it would be rendered for 60 hours! And there will be at least 8 such animations! And here's what I think. Thanks to you, I was finally able to save some money with Patreon, and in principle I can buy a new video card. But on the other hand, 3090 will cost at least $ 2500, and that's all the money I have. I honestly tried to wait for the release of 3080 20gb or 3070 16 Gb, but apparently they will not be presented soon, and they will most likely be bought up immediately.

Now I see now three options.

1. Continue to work like this and wait for the announcement of a new video card. I like this option the most. Because it will be very difficult for me to explain to my loved ones why I bought components for $ 2500, when we have such a deplorable financial condition. That is, I will literally give away all the money that I could save.

2. Buy 3090, and solve this issue once and for all. I like this option for its simplicity. No need to worry about video memory anymore. No need to constantly read the news from Nvidia, waiting for new releases. No need to check cryptocurrency rates every day and hope that they will finally collapse. A good option… But $ 2500! A nightmare!

3. To abandon animation altogether. There is also an option to abandon animations altogether. Forever. I love making animations. I love to learn something new in this regard. And I think I'm pretty good at it! But I also understand that I just can't afford to do it right now. Maybe in the next game?

In general, I am waiting for your opinions. Especially from patrons. It's, like, your money. But please, if you have an opinion on what I should do, write it in any convenient place. I read everything. I don't always answer, of course, but I read absolutely everything.

In general, something like that. I hope I haven't put too much stress on you.

Now I have a lot of work to do on the update. Waiting for your opinions. <3

Continue to work like this
This would be my choice as I feel $2500 is a huge amount to spend all at once. Waiting may reward you in the long run but it surely will not lose you anything(other than more time per render).
that's all the money I have
This is actual reason why recommend waiting, 'cuz its always safe than being sorry. But then again, you do you.
I love making animations
Thus dropping them altogether is off the table. What about less no. but more frames for the anims or something like that? Find a system that works for you.

PS: One more reason is I bit the 20 series bullet a bit too late and now feel like that was the stupidest thing to do, since 30 series launched, especially bcuz they dropped the price in my country.
Now I'm broke and all that I can do is OC the hell outta the card and hope it doesn't fry:ROFLMAO:

In my opinion, the third option is the smartest at the moment, it is nice to see animations, but they are irrelevant to me and many who play this game,
(I apologize to everyone who loves animations, but I believe that because of the situation PixelsLab is in, you understand what I'm talking about) For me, whether they were there or not, it's the same for me, not because I don't appreciate your effort or something else, but because the story is more important. the dialogue itself, the images themselves are enough at least for me.
All in all, I’m sure you’ll do what’s best for everyone (first you and your loved ones), and I believe it’s not all that black. All the best to you. ;)

Should I buy a 3090?
Hi PixelsLab

I might be completely wrong, but while you said you like doing animations and they might pull in new people when well done, I think abandoning them for this game - at least for now - might be wiser.

Animations would mean that either the updates get scarcer, or to buy that 3090.
Smaller updates or fewer would harm you I think for the game would have reduced publicity and people tend to turn away from games that have fewer updates or insubstantial ones. In my mind, one or two animations can't compensate for missing story progression.

Buying that graphics card would be a huge investment and kind of commitment - from your post, I feel like too big at this point.

I think to keep the updates like they are right now content-wise by rendering the actual story instead of animations would be better. That way people have something to play through instead of five seconds of animation, some topics to discuss - especially with the kind of story you are creating here.

At last, this is also a selfish post. While I hope this works out for you! - if it doesn't, everything that brings us closer to this story being finished is a plus in my book. ;)
So much, that in case you decided to buy any graphics card or additional power for your current set-up, I would advise you to try and up your actual story output before using that additional power for animations.

Don't get me wrong - I like well-done animations and would you at some point want to experiment with them and add them into this game later on or your next one, I'm all for that.
But in the end, I can really enjoy this story without animations - animations without a story - well I don't really need a VN for that.

I would suggest that for now, remove all animations. Once the story is done, you can go back and make animations for the scenes you want. That way, we get the story (that we really care about) sooner, and then we get the animations (that will then enhance the story) a bit at a time. I know of a few games that did this and it worked well.

Buying a 3090 can ultimately be a prudent decision. But spending every penny you have is rarely the right thing to do. If it puts you in a position where any unexpected expense will fuck you over I'd advise against it.
Also be careful with crowd sourcing financial decisions. While asking for advice is fine, it is you who will have to live with the consequences. You can still buy one later after you've saved up some more. There's a fair chance they card will get cheaper over the coming months as well. Although with the 3090 being less of a consumer card and more are 3D-artists workhorse it's hard to tell.

I wouldn't abandon animation all together, especially if it's something you like and you're interested in growing and getting better. There's plenty of games that do fine without them but well done animations can still make you stand out. I'd say work with your current limitations. Maybe do less of them and only in scenes where the memory ins't as big an issue.

I think third option is better, most of us (who interested in story) don't mind if there isn't any animation.
