At least we knew for a looooooooooong time that it would end now (not the date but the update 17). It's not that he suddenly decided to wrap it up and end, it was communicated early on and everybody (at least on Patreon) knew about this.
A "poor choice of dev"? It is not like somebody wrote a game and then picked a developer - everything you mention like the potential are the very same dev.
As for the ratings, those are highly subjective. I completely disagree with your statement that it would "hardly deserve a 3/5". But keep in mind that your criticism of the ending, whether justified or not, is not something that most reviewers could take into account since those reviews are way older.
Started a new game in v17 and I can't write a name for the PC. It worked in v15, I still have the saves from that.
