Have you not used the "Start Any Episode" feature in the Main Menu of the game? It literally allows you to do exactly that.
how does that work if you have to start at the first chapter because you now want to try out a relationship with the distinctly man-faced mother or her boozy, troublemaker friend? Or maybe you just want a relationship with Lily, or one of the daughters but not the other?
How does the Start Any Episode feature bypass those problems?

You don't have to start at the first chapter (episode). Start any episode and set the relationships where you want them to be and see how it turns out.

You specifically said "This means that you can explore all content and then switch to a preferred woman to end with without ending up with a pretty bad conclusion." and Start Any Episode lets you do that. You want to see other paths without replaying the game? Just change the relationships and replay the episode. You get a "bad ending"? just change the relationships and replay the episode. No need to go back to the beginning of the game.

Part of Starting Any Episode is setting the major variables, like the degree of romance with each girl and some of the big decisions. It's a bit imprecise and there are some minor inconsistencies (it will assume you inform Monica about the Will, for example, even though that's impossible if you aren't romancing her). But it works well for getting a sense of how the game unfolds with different relationship options.

I take it that Monica is the third party the will refers to, then?
