Personally, I would start with VI or Sengoku, heavily leaning towards VI, (The "New" Timeline) as they are significantly better games than the previous ones and Rance is a more well fleshed out character. If you like VI, then feel free to either go to Sengoku and onward, or start with the originals and play in order. VI is probably tied for the best game in the series (that's translated), and the plot takes place in a country that none of the previous games (with a small exception) touched on so you won't be missing much.

The remakes for 1 and 2 aren't bad, but they aren't really great either. 1 and 2 were Alicesoft's opening moves, not their magnus opus. They're even as remakes (known as 01 and 02) they're dated and straight forward, whereas the rest of the series is known for its ambitious themes, gameplay elements, and a wide cast of interesting characters. 3 is when the games are considered to have gotten "good", but as the above posters mention the remake isn't translated yet and the original is phenomenally dated. IV isn't as dated(no remake for that one) and you need a Virtual Machine to play 4.1 and 4.2, which I don't think anyone expects you to do. Kichikuou (The Fifth "mainline" game in the original timeline) is probably the 1st or 2nd best in the entire series, playing it first makes no sense at all because it's the finale of the "original" timeline.

I didn't play them in order and I don't think that impacted my experience at all. I've replayed each of the new timeline games (except 5D) at least 3 times each and only replayed Kichikuou from the original timeline. If you like strategy games, start with Sengoku. If you like RPGs, start with VI. Order doesn't particularly matter, just have fun with the games.
No, you don't need a virtual machine to play 4.1 and 4.2, there's a version you can just straight up download from the alicesoft wiki that allows you to play them without it.

How many Sengoku events are pulled upon and referenced in future games (minus the obvious fighting xavier and such) more of out of the things you can miss due to other countries being taken over to mouri/monster army/takeda.

it'll feel pretty shitty if the game really forces a 2nd playthrough to get all the canon events which is how it feels currently, the game loves 2nd playthrough bait.

Have you played Rance X ? To get the real ending you need like 20 playthrough, and you can't miss the real ending, because if you miss it you will miss not just some events, but another entire game

I haven't but it's a much different thing to have mutually exclusive and multiple outcomes for things in an ending type game like in kichkikuou and I assume 10 than having the same thing in a middle of the road game and have a bunch of mutually exclusive events and events you will likely never see even in the "true route" all be considered canon and referenced in future games.

Which is why I asked how many of them will actually be relevant in 8, 9, or 10 and not just sengoku exclusive content that won't actually ever be brought up again.

8 will have 0
9 0
10 will have a lot.
I understand your point but also in sengoku everything is based on hidden trigger modifier ( sometimes random ) it's hard to predict what AI will do, but is possible, and if you have played it like 2000 times you will just reload the game if a trigger doesn't occour.
Same "shit" with rance X, you can manipulate RNG bettern than sengoku but the game is so big that, unless you follow a walkthrough, some stuff appear to be very unpredictable

I just woke up from a strangely specific dream about Rance.
In this world, Rance has fucked so many ladies that a house or a castle is no longer able to contain his brats and goddesses.
It was a dream of a spin-off game whereby he builds a village from scratch and has classrooms to teach his children and meanwhile, he has sex with his wives non-stop. This is dozens of years after the final game. This is Rance at his 'maturity' where he has learnt how to say 'I love her the most' to his other wives while pointing at Sill, making her stop the movements of her hands to blush. Her daughter would tilt her head in bewilderment, looking at Rance and Sill then urge her mom to continue making tea that she was in the middle of making. 'Mommy- quick, I want more~!' After Sill hears Rance say- 'Even though she's just a lowly slave GAHAHAHAHA!!!', she stops being in a daze and continues making more tea for her tea-addicted daughter.

There are auditions for new teachers but Rance's first requirement is- 'Is she hot?' and naturally, fucks the teachers, making more children to teach while Sanada Tourin is somehow still there- filtering out the bad eggs and assassins teachers.

He's pretty old by this point, and so are the other girls (except for the new ones) and despite his rule of 'no having sex with girls over 30', he'd still scream at the top of his lungs 'KANAMIIIIIIIIIII!!!!'. Moments later, she'd rush over from teaching a ninja class deep in the forest and say 'What's the matter, Rance?'. She's older now, but in his eyes still cute as a button.
He'd rush over to princess carry her, press a button to reveal a hidden passage to the royal sex room and start having sex with her. And my dream ends while Rance is still balls-deep in Kanami when his spidey senses tingle and runs out of the room buck naked, hyper weapon still out and after seeing one of his male children getting kidnapped, he grabs Chaos- hung as an ornamental decoration, throws it at the boss kidnapper and yells out:

'WHAT THE F$#$ are you DOING!?!?!' then massacres the foolish people foolish enough to kidnap Rance almighty's children.

In my dream, Rance grows old and still has sex non-stop. In my dream, each and every girl he's ever been with would live alongside him and they'd have a ranking system as well as a number indicating how many times the girl has had sex with Rance. In my dream, he'd raise his children like a loving parent and even though he says he doesn't care for the guys, he still looks out for them. Incest is a big no-no though. And for some reason, in my dream specifically- while the other girls have numbers up in the hundreds and thousands, Shizuka's number is 13 despite being ranking number 3.

I'm not kidding. I had this dream.

do i play this in order? or how? please help
Personal Recommendation:

1: Play the remakes of 1 and 2. They're brief and while the gameplay is a bit dated it's not awful.

2: If you can forgive a game for looking very 1993, play Rance 3's old version (there's a remake, it's being translated, but it's not in English yet) and Rance 4. Playing 3 is much more important than 4 but you don't strictly need to play either of them.

3: Give Kichikuou Rance a try. Completely non-canon, but it's also a fun TB grand strategy game, if that's your jam.

4: Try 5D. Game's very controversial because of it's core gameplay system, and it's not horribly lore-important except for the fact that it introduces Rizna.

5: Play Rance 6. Generally considered the first of the modern games. This is where you see the crisp, clean visuals start getting used. Game's also kinda long.

6: Play Rance 7. Sengoku Rance is the one many people fawn over because it was their first Rance title. Game's fun.

7: Rance Quest / Magnum. Magnum is the expansion pack Alicesoft made to address fan feedback, you absolutely want to play the game with it installed, and it's such an improvement that IIRC you can't even get the base version of RQ without it if you buy it from Manga Gamer?

8: Rance 9. Most recent English language release. It's fun, but it also represents the beginning of the end for the franchise. Lotta long standing plot threads are resolved.

Hello, sorry if this question has been asked before, but I tried Rance 02 kai and...

View attachment 2735691

How do I fix this? Am I missing a font? Do I have to install something else?
As a rule of thumb if you're having problems running Japanese games on your English copy of Windows, you need to change your app locale settings. Even fully translated Japanese games will still make heavy use of Japanese text, so that's usually the best place to start. While Windows ships with most common languages, most of them stay wrapped up in storage to save physical space on your install and are only utilized- normally- when you physically tell your OS that you're based in a specific place. Change the App Locale to Japan and it'll start reading both English and Japanese characters.

In Windows 10 you go to Time and Language, select Region, under 'Related Settings' select 'Additional Date, Time and Regional Settings', select 'Region', under 'formats' select Japanese, and click Apply.

Then under the administrative tab, click 'change system locale', and change it to 'Japan' and restart your computer.

While this wont affect the operation of any software, some programs like Spotify might think you're Japanese and start recommending J-Pop and City Pop to you, and instead of dividing folder layers with the '/' it will instead start using the yen symbol. Don't ask me why.

I'm not following what you're doing. If you can read the read me file, didn't you extract it properly? The After Story download is a 7z file, are you using 7zip to extract it?

Yeah so for after story I extracted it and the readme says "Place the ランス6その後.ain and ランス6その後GA.ald files into the folder with the game exe." do I grab these 2 files and move them into rance 6 with that exe file?

Here's a Cheat Engine table I made for Sengoku Rance. To use it just rename the file from .xml to .CT (had to change it to upload it here) and open it with Cheat Engine, then connect Cheat Engine to the running game.

The table can be used to modify:
  • Money
  • Remaining actions in a turn
  • Requirements (e.g. to search for a dungeon without using any troops, same with diplomacy, ...)
  • For every commander:
    • a flag indicating whether they have already been used this turn (0 = not used, 1 = used)
    • current and maximum number of troops
    • attributes
    • current and maximum HP
    • current and maximum Level (also increases damage in single combat, e.g. in dungeons)
To make life easier, values that are commonly set to the same value can be set using their header. E.g. to set all of Rance's attributes to 50 000 you can just double click the value column entry of the "Attributes" drop-down (which should be blank) and set the value there. Same for HP, Level and Troops.

Some values get changed when a turn ends, e.g. all attributes reset to their normal values, and some values you may just not want to change in general, e.g. the remaining actions. To do this just click the checkbox for the value you want to freeze. The Atrributes, HP, Level and Troops drop-downs freeze all their children if the header is frozen.

If you get new commanders and want to modify them, just copy and paste the entry of the last commander in the list, then double click address of the copy and change the counter in the last entry field. For example, if the last entry was "+5*8" then change it to "+6*8". Keep in mind that the counter is hexadecimal, so after 9 comes A. You can also set the correct name of the commander at this point.

I made this for the patched version, so I'm unsure if it works for the original version. I also know that at least the commanders section doesn't work in some of the additional modes you unlock after finishing the game once.
Just curious, can this cheat engine be used to have more than 30 commanders? Or that is hard coded in game? I don't want the game to be easier, I have fun for years the way it is at the moment, the only thing I don't like is other countries having more than 30 and the player having the limit, some girls need to be fired at some point.

Anyone have an idea on how to get Rance X?
English translation is still in the works plus Rance 03 will likely release before it to give full context before Rance X. Rance X is massive. Over 30% larger than the entirety of Baldr Sky. With the gameplay aspects and such, it's no wonder why it's taking long. Especially since there are so many hidden events and systems, the translation team keeps finding very rare events or aspects to the game that need to be translated. The translator played the game multiple times before being assigned Rance X and he keeps finding things he never saw while playing. If you just mean any version of it, you could download a torrent of it from nyaa or something.

holy fucking shit what is this star wars????? damnnnnn XD
Nah, the thing about Rance is that you got about 30 years worth of games, combined with remakes of the earlier titles, combined with the fact that the first games to get translated into English was the 7th entry. Which leads a lotta people to saying, "Oh, you gotta start with Sengoku Rance" which isn't necessarily wrong but.... a lotta nuance will get left on the table because the game can't hope to explain 6 games worth of back story and character development.

then as an epilogue of the saga they made
Kichikuou was never strictly intended as a finale to the franchise, the problem was that then- as ever- being a professional eroge maker was something of a passion project. The people at Alicesoft were not naïve about the long term prospects of their little project and Kichikuou was their way of making sure that no matter what else happened, they'd leave their mark.

Of course Kichikuou ended up massively outperforming expectations because the market was receptive to a video game that just happened to have a bunch of smut in it over a game hiding it's flaws in a mountain of tits.

The problem was that Kichikuou also massively raised the expectations Alicesoft was placing on Rance games which lead to a massively ballooned dev time on Rance 5, and then lead to them canceling three different builds for the game before finally shelving it, making a different game (which sold well) and only afterwards returning to 5D (D being the fourth build of the game) holding themselves to the standards that it had to be weird, stupid, and it would ship no matter what.

Which is why 5D is so bizarre.

So they decided to start a remake series of RANCE I II and III called RANCE 01 02 and 03
Rance 2 was initially added as part of a compilation sale Alicesoft did in 2010 to test various ideas. The reception to the remake was so favorable that it got 1 and 3's remakes greenlit.
