which version did you end up getting? The one i decided on was the itch.io version with the decensor patch.
Still determining a few things from this version compared to the original japanese version.

Mate, it's Japan. The fact that this game has BL that isn't between just a guy and a girl who has a dick is a step forward. Japan isn't America, and they haven't gotten to the point where they readily accept LGBT issues.

Does anyone know if you're supposed to be able to save anywhere you want? It seems like you're only supposed to be able to save at a diary, but there's a button that brings up the save menu. I think the devs must have added it for themselves and forgot to remove it.

You're thinking too hard. It's a porn game and it's just that non trap BL is even more of a niche in their core target audience so they provide a way to turn it off.

Go upstairs to the second floor and near the dual stairways, click on the statue on the north side. The one with the note on its base that says "I give my life to the abyss." You'll push it off it off the ledge and trigger the next series of events, which are pretty self-explanatory.
I'd suggest storing every item you don't need or currently don't know a use for as there are some forced sequences ahead that block your path or force you to go into a certain direction. You'll be forced to tediously backtrack if you don't have space and in a few instances can potentially be forced to leave items behind until later or end up in a situation where you have to toss stuff, which I know might cause hoarders to scream unto the aether from the injustice.
