More often than not, it is enough for players that they can customize the transparency of the textbox in the game settings.
If you want to make it super cool, you can make it into bubbles like in comics.

oddly enough it looks to human almost like its just a mask not sure if i like it personally
Anyone else feel this way? I kinda like this "half-anthro" look and feel like it matches the spirit of the original game, but I can be convinced otherwise. Leave a positive react on this post if you think it's fine, and a positive react on Shark_inA-chiar's post if you'd like Vanilla (and/or other characters) to be less human and more furry/anthro.

This style is more attractive, for me
Perhaps you could try out some anthro-styled image generations to gauge reactions, and work from there. Personally I'm more a fan of the anthro style, but I don't mind this half-anthro style either and I'm cool with either decision.
There's a lot to do before I even think of adding new characters, so probably not.
