Not too worried about item deterioration, honestly I find it a more annoying mechanic in most game than actually adding to anything. It seems to really depend what kind of game you are going for, a more micro or macro kind of management. If I'm trying to rebuild civilization or at least my own little tribe turned town, then me running around fixing shower heads does not make much sense, I would likely just delegate people to "keeping camp fixed" or whatever, at least later on. If it's more a few "lone survivors" then sure, the personal individual management of shovel handles is fine I guess.
I've always been more partial to the macro management, since honestly, a lot of porn games (basically every sandbox dating game) are micro but I still think you should consider which direction you want your game to end up in. It can be a bit of a mix, as you of course start out relatively alone but what your main focus will be and what the end game will look like is important to have down early on.
Bugfixes should also be main priority while getting down the core of your game, a missed bug in the early stage can screw you over later in serious ways as you have built on a faulty foundation.
