It's funny how rare the word "masturbation" is on F95zone. You'd think this was a Jane Austen book club the way people go on about plot and characters.
Well, tbf, as I'm fapping while the writing is particularly good, I'll grunt "Brav--ohhh! unnnghhh! B-B-Bravv-ohhhh Auuuteur!" as my monocle gets foggy. It's hard to clap one-handed but fortunately the fap sounds like rigorous applause anyway.
Quite a lot of foggy monocles for Roman's work, I must say. He's the best.
fwiw, only partially joking. I seriously can't fap to bad writing unless the game design and art are both incredible enough to make up for it. I drag most F95 games into the trash after 5 minutes since the writing is so bad. My suspension of disbelief threshold is incredibly low and I need good enough writing to feel engaged in any AVN or it just doesn't do it for me. Roman's writing is the best I've seen in any adult game, so he really is skilled vs what's out there in AVNs & videogames in general.

I think one of the bigger contributors to the discussions about characters (and plot, often) is that many people self-insert into games. So if the MC is an asshole, the player might think, "But I'm not an asshole, so why do I want to play one?" Or, if a LI is toxic, someone might think, "I ditch toxic relationships in my real life, so why would I want one in a game?" I can't say that's for all people — I'm from a heavily literary background, from reading to editing to writing, so I'm analytical of stories without feeling like I have to be the MC or anything — but for a very large number of cases I assume that's why they get into characters and plot so much.
Well, a good AVN will have enough choices to keep the typical player invested in the character if they like to self-insert into MC.
For me though, it actually is about good writing. (Of course, I need to like the scenario too, but I play F-MC games just fine, so identifying with MC is not required for me either).
I just can't fap to an AVN written by someone with remedial writing skill or little life experience. Breaks the immersion of the game (you can be immersed without self-inserting) if it feels like it was written by a 12 year old virgin, like fapping to a stick-figure drawing.

For my part, it's not about fapping, although obviously that happens sometimes. It's much more about the story and characters to me. I don't self-insert, but I do need to be able to connect with the characters or I can't care about what they do or go through in a story. For the plot and story themselves, I definitely also think the writing is important. For instance, if a writer tells me a character is an expert spy but that same character can't seem to remember their cover story, I struggle with that part, especially if it's a major piece of the whole.
Likely from my years of editing for various publishers and corporations, the quality of English usage and grammar bothers me considerably less. If it's not understandable or there are glaring errors (e.g., "her vagina slid into my dick"), I definitely have a hard time with it. But I tend to be pretty forgiving when my proofreader / editor hat isn't on, probably mostly because I run into so many writers whose first language isn't English. I see poorer English often, and hiring someone like me tends to be pricey. So unless they can get a freelancer or something, having a proofreader actually might be outside of their budget, depending on their actual monthly earnings and other finances.
This game definitely didn't have that problem. Some of the scenes in DAST are exceptionally erotic, so much so that at times I felt almost compelled to be attracted to the girls. It was pretty amazing to see the talent RomanHume has for writing. I haven't played Love, Lust, and Lunacy yet, but I believe he's the writer, so I would expect similar quality in descriptions and dialogue. I definitely remember the major story scenes with Amanda, Cassie, Nanami, Emily (a briefer scene) and both Lola and Lita being extremely well-written. Roman has a huge talent for writing, for sure.

I've always been willing to do a lot of the... call it imaginitive/stylistic heavy lifting for the writing in my preferred genres. I can read endless series of shitty kindle unlimited sci-fi if I find something intriguing about the premise/universe. For porn games I basically just need the English to be not broken beyond my ability to repair, and by this point I can do a pretty impressive degree of automatic mental substitution on the fly. I'll sometimes remember a different, literate version of the text, and have the actual version come as an unpleasant surprise on replay.
So the writing basically has to be borderline incomprehensible to fall below my standards of enjoyment.
That said, it's actually kind of shocking how many porn games there are with genuinely good writing. The number really has no business being anything not statistically indistinguishable from zero, but even once you get past that there's more than you'd expect. And not necessarily where you'd expect. It was one of the weirdest surprises of my life, going to jerk off only to find myself somehow weeping at something from a game called My Bully is My Lover, of all fucking things.

Even most of the ones considered top-of-the-top by others. But my standards are apparently high.
Best of the best to me writing-wise are this game from Roman, Tabletop Born-Star and the abandoned HTML game Casting Director. Basilicata's (Tabletop pornstar dev) first game starts off uneven but gets better in writing too. TBH, unless you're talking comedy, where the standards of what makes writing "good" are different, that's it.
I think EvaKiss games are fantastic vs what's out there, but that's due to her talent for erotic build-up and her plethora of choice-after-choice-after-choice. Her writing is good enough for my porn-game standards (admittedly high for drama-based AVNs), but by no means good tv or novel quality, and not touching Telltale Games' best work on the video-game end where good writing is few and far between. (TWD Season 1, A Wolf Among Us, Tales From The Borderlands were all cream of the crop there, vs some other games I'd ignore). I say in my review of DAST on F95 that I could see Roman getting to that good quality Telltale level as the game develops - which is basically good tv/film quality - and I think Basilicata and the dude who abandoned Casting Director can potentially get to that Telltale level too.
I'll check MBIML and some others out you think are best-of-the-best though if you have any other suggestions.

For me, the maid was the hottest and sexy of all, it was better to add, for example, a wife, a daughter and one friend to a maximum of 3/4 characters, and create relationships like . with master/slave maid. You can make your wife a jealous wife, your daughter a typical romantic character. It would be cool . And you don't give 10 characters and then wait forever for your character in the next update, and at the end everything was interrupted. The more girls doesn't mean it's better. I prefer to focus on 3/4 and have frequent updates with them.

Yes, but due to the appearance of the game, it had too many characters, so we got 2 scenes with a maid, someone, for example, thinks that another character is sexy, will also get 2 scenes, too many characters for so few updates

Very nice VN, love how you could choose who you want and who not, how you like to play and all, the story wasn't bad either, infact it was very decent. It sad to see this abandoned, I really wanted to see more and least hope to get a real ending. The renders were also amazing and the characters were very beautiful.

I seen the new game but not sure yet where that one is going, part I liked in this game is when you go for other girls and neglect your wife she also went seeking fun in other waters. I like in some good games somewhat Netorare, Netorase and Netori, but aslong it not forced and can be avoided if want avoid it.

FFR, if you're going to ask for similar games it should be over on the Recommendations and Identification forum, specifically set up for that purpose (see Site Rule #2.4). Asking about a continuation (or the new game, Lust, Love and Lunacy) is fine, since it's a project supporting the same dev — RomanHume is writer for the updated game — and redoing this game (a lot, like a1fox3 mentioned), especially since what you've played from this thread will not be finished.

Roman is not involved in the new (probably already abandoned) game at all..nor is he the writer for it.
How many times must this be said. Meep has said herself, on that thread and on Patreon she is just reusing the assets Roman gave her....it's a new story (hers).
