Not sure if This has been Addressed yet,
But, the New version on the Erawiki of EraTohoTW is Quite Buggy,
Loading In gives a LOT of Errors that I have No Idea Why they Happen.
They Aren't Errors I can Ignore either, as Youmu's Breast check keeps Crashing whenever I am With them.
I've Downloaded it off the GIT and Wiki about 3 Times already.

Edit: New version removes some characters, some that even had dialogue, because Pedy doesn't like them. Mike, Takane, Sannyo, Misumaru, Tsukasa, Megumu, Chimata, Momoyo, have been replaced atm.
Think I'll take a break from TW then, development on it is pretty disappointing lately. Both devs/branches are questionable now.

Yes, they're doing more damage than gain to the game.

Thats a bizarre decision, especially considering how much dialogue Tsukasa had(I don't think the rest of them had any) and the replacements they brought in don't appear to have dialogue at all.
Honestly I never really paid much mind to the girls who had been removed so it doesn't affect me much.
I think part of having a very niche game like the era games being handled by community translation and modding is that you have to put up with the sometimes questionable decisions of the people running such efforts.
The alternative to that is of course to find a team of likeminded and talented people to attempt to create another branch without the weird decisions...which then results in just having yet another branch. Diluting the talent pool further and inevitably you will make a decision which is controversial to a part of the community who end up rallying together to make another branch and so on.

At this point I prefer to have another branch of people who does the job without deleting what the original dev of the game has done. I don't like some characters too but if I have to mod a game I think there is someone else who likes it.
For example to me Eika is the worst but pedy kept her instead of Tsukasa...wtf...
If there are other people who can improve this game with some concern about the community I would support them 100%.
At the end of the day each branch is a mixture of both translation of the original work and a mod, mods are known for not only adding content but removing content not to the authors taste. Part of following these sorts of efforts is making peace with the fact that the modders will have their own creative vision that may conflict with what you want.
These games are already rather niche so unless you are willing to do the work of running a branch and modding the game yourself the chances of a person forming out of the aether ready to mod the game to your satisfaction while translating things is slim.
I looked it over, the notes explicitly call the replacements placeholders that aren't meant to appear in gameplay. Supposedly to set the groundwork of them being replaced later, who with remains ambiguous.

Some mods indeed deletes something but is not something that usually happends.
I know since this kind of games are niche is less likely to get another branch working on it. My statement in the last post is a big IF with no real hope about it.
The only thing is the usually "let's hope things will get better soon" and wait for other news and reviews from others about it.
eraTW is at least easy to mod and you can paste back in the affected files/folders. I assume people will start sharing a guide for this eventually.

What was the motivation behind it even? They couldn't just make certain characters toggleable and call it a day?
You can already toggle characters from the settings. Might be a cheat (star menu), but it's easily accessible.
As for the motivation, nobody knows. His commit stated "poorly designed".

Mods are known to remove some things from a game, but it's usually because it's a buggy mess and they had to clean it out (most TES examples go here). However, as some characters that were removed actually had content, this is a case of the mod maker being very autistic and going on a screeching spree about who he doesn't like, and essentially being those dipshits on Twitter who whine about the anime they translate.
I don't understand the reasoning behind doing that. I also don't see anything mentioning that on the gitgud and it's also unusual that only the newer 2hus from Unconnected Marketeers would have been targeted by this.
Where did Pedy say that? This MIGHT be an issue with "too many characters" as part of the gameplay loop for why you can't find everyone around in Gensokyo whenever you'd like. I believe that's most likely because the engine can't handle over 100+ characters at the same time doing whatever. (One of many reasons I'm against the supposed adding of fan characters or male/non-humanoid characters people won't bother romancing in the first place as to what Parsee aludes to in one of her files.)
Think like games of The Sims or Rimworld when you have too many characters in one area so the game chugs.
I'm hoping this is just a temporary thing or something because replacing UM with PC98 is strange. Gonna need more of an official statement on this one.
Edit: Might this be related to the recent branching drama? (Not that I'm against Pedys reactions to said branch based on what I read it's doing edgy K-tier bullshit that doesn't fit with the rest of TW.)
Or whatever the "NTR" toggle in Tsukasas dialogue is related to? (Wouldn't know, I didn't bother with her when I saw that, but it wouldn't explain outright nuking the entire UM roster instead of a quick alteration, so this probably isn't the reason.)

The only reasoning behind it is that Pedy is known to hate the new Touhous and has been threatening to remove them for a long time, and he finally did it. That's about it. Go back through half a year of /egg/ threads for info on that, but he usually doesn't post under his trip. The last couple of threads pretty much go over everything second hand. The "Poorly designed" is him thinking the new Touhous suck, it has nothing to do with the characters in the game obviously as there are a ton of other girls without content/dialogue and Tsukasa had dialogue and some special events/content.
There won't be any more of an "official" statement than that. The characters are already removed, and it's only temporary if he changes his mind or somebody adds them back in in another fork.
Pretty goddamn stupid if true, since there have been other opportunities to be pissed about the state of 2hu things, like the (thankfully not canon) gacha shit or the more cancerous and loud chunks of the fanbase.
I myself wasn't happy with the first direct genderbend in Ten Desires. Up until then the rest of the cast could be hand waved as just "related" to mythological figures or whatever. Frankly that kind of lazy bullshit is more Fate/Gacha+Endless Reboots bread and butter which is one of many reasons why I started avoiding that like the plague.
Thankfully this is a video game so having some agency in how you avoid characters you don't like is certainly on the table, even easier with the disable feature, though considering he replaced a character people here were clearly enjoying with characters that are likely to never see ANY content (except for maybe "Dark Kasen" who has some degree of popularity), I don't know what else there is to say. All I can say is save backups of the version before he removed characters.
By the way if any devs are lurking around and you're looking to remove characters:
Lily Black is STILL not an actual character.
You'd think the recolor fan character would take priority on removal over a perceived subpar game roster.

Ironically as a Fate/Grand Order degen, the game's mascot is probably one of my least favorite characters precisely because of how unavoidable interactions with her are. Like no, I don't want my dude romancing a person that hasn't had a personality until after the game's story started, literally has no other viable romantic options, and all the other shit that makes her vulnerable to being attached to literally anyone who has your role.
I feel like it's a cardinal sin for a gacha game to be like "no, you're going to paired with this character and you will like it." Bonus points for the game literally making it impossible for people who actually like the character to raise bond point points and be rewarded for actually using her like the characters you actually have to roll for. Extra bonus points for the game being like "no, you're not allowed to use her objectively more useful form. You must use her inferior version and put her on the front lines, even if it has no synergy with 90% of people's preferred stats." Mash: a case of how to get your fanbase to hate your mascot.
