Well, they take place in the same universe, for one...
...tho by "several years," Cari meant "more than a decade." There's a timeline posted on his Discord that he vetted that mentioned OIAL took place about 13-14 years prior to Eternum.
Also, yes, there are references. Former President Stabb being mentioned in Orion's intro monologue was reference to an important side character in OIAL; The Sons of Astaroth - the bad guys of OIAL - were mentioned during one of Orion's convos with Alex and in a newspaper article back at the Red Herring; Orion mentioned learning his massaging skills from a guy he saw, which is heavily implied to be a side character that the OIAL MC meets (a Thai who worked as a bodyguard for one of the LIs in one of her parties); Hiromi - a side character in OIAL - was namedropped by the two courtesans/prostitutes back in that unnamed server that Orion and Caly found themselves in back in 0.3; The aphrodisiac "Ember's Moan" which Akira used on Nova and Orion during the college party was from a town that the OIAL MC visited in the main story and was used twice in the game - one for a gag, the other for a threesome scene.
Those are just the references that I recall but there's likely to be more in the future.
Also OIAL essentially established that magic exists in the setting and that people in the setting like the OIAL MC can experience dreams that are heavily implied to be out-of-body experiences...which basically are the seeds Cari have planted and are now reaping for use in Eternum.

Unless the UK has different rules when it comes to their exchange student program I'm pretty sure you still need to be enrolled at a school there in order to avail said program. So Orion, Chang, and Annie still have to go back to finish their studies there before they can go wherever they wish afterwards (like Penny's college in Orion's case).

But if that were to happen while Orion is still sorting his feelings then it'll be a fucking shitshow and might end up breaking the group. No, Orion needs to be at the very least sure about how he feels before he makes the commitment. It might not happen in a reflection event, but it needs to happen prior to the confrontation so that Orion can give them his honest and heartfelt thoughts on the matter (which will likely be what sways the girls to form the harem).

Nova is more active and takes initiatives, there are several rounds and it lasts longer. after her first orgasm, a flip is switched. I don't know the UK system in detail. that student exchange program could be like an internship in a company, set at the end of the school year and lasts until graduation. going back would be just to get the paper diploma. MC arrives during the school year in the US, it didn't seem like the beginning of a new school year.

In all the VNs I played through, it's always choices that ejects you from the path, but nothing to come back afterwards. if there is a "come back" story, the drama happened before the beginning of the game

The problem with this is that Cari isn't exactly known for writing heavy drama in his work (hell, his last work basically didn't had THAT much drama, and stuck through its comedy-adventure fest story for the most part). And by heavy I mean the kind of shit that leads to ongoing conflicts or drama that spans throughout the update or multiple updates like the ones in other AVNs like, say, Leap of Faith or Summer's Gone or STWA: Unbroken. Nor do his patrons back on his Discord want to see it go that route, as they view Eternum as more of an adult mystery adventure story with dashes of comedy, horror, and drama (with the lewds as a sort of "bonus"). And knowing Cari he'll likely not overextend the heaviness of his work and will only use drama when the plot requires it, and not the other way around like in some AVNs where the drama IS the plot.I enjoy drama in AVNs. so a shitshow would be welcomed
