I don't get all that moaning about Kates line, they were essentially 2 separate games, which wasn't a great idea to begin with (because the work load is essentially doubled), maybe the author wanted to capture larger audience with it, but continuation and regular updates of both AND endless forks that people seem to want, bleat the workload to unmanageable levels for the budget he is working with (be it time and/or money), and then there will always be loud minority that will say that is all wrong and how the author has ruined everything (the usual behavior of the unsatisfied people these days)
IMHO the best option would be to combine the 2 lines together into "one" line (what the author might be trying to accomplish already), you play Max for a while, then the action turns towards Kate, you play that for couple in game days, then back to Max and so on and so forth (but this would require much better quest log, because the current one is much too vague and unclear, so the player can keep up with all the story lines), that way all players get to see most of the content, so the work put into it isn't "wasted", perhaps some skip options might be implemented for non-critical choices for those who aren't interested in the other line at all
and for those who complain about the purity of character of the main characters, I think you should simply stop playing while you still can, forget these games exist at all, visit a church, go to a confession and do the penance, so you can avoid corruption of your pure minds and move on with your life
