It's a well thought out post, but I disagree.

It is clear that Antonella's disappearance has affected the MC greatly. He has tried to bury himself in police work and, when that turned out not enough, turned to drugs, alcohol and sex addiction. It's not uncommon and the MC has a better reason than most.

18 years may seem like a very long time to "get over it" but who can say, really? I'm not his psychologist... It seems reasonable that his new, bad, life has consumed him so much that he couldn't get out. If you think about it like that, it's amazing that he is still a somewhat normal person.

His reversal to his old role in his family after returning home is also not uncommon. It's probably a good thing for the MC that he's able to try and forget about all the shit that happened and can go back, mentally speaking, to the past where his main concern was his family's bickering and shenanigans.
For me it's not so much about not being able to get over it, but the intensity of it. He sacrificed all of her daughter's childhood. That is no small thing, and from what we saw, he really cares and loves her. He had a decent job, he could have brought her daughter with him or at least visit her, Osaka - Tokyo in shinkansen is nothing. Are we supposed to believe that in 18 years he never took holidays?
Is all this situation impossible? No, nothing is, but it is a little bit contrived.
And it's not that he is acting now like a family man, rather like a blushing schoolgirl. He is a cop that has been immersing himself in the criminal underworld for years, dealing with criminals, he shouldn't be phased by the antics of a teenager.

It is funny that he's this fascist pig who abuses his authority but also gets bullied by teenage girls. The duality of man, I guess.

To me, it rather seems as if Isabella was his sister and MC is still the young adult who dated Antonella.

Of course he's not a family man, because he basically skipped becoming one by not being there for his daughter.

Could he have visited? Of course. Should he have? Of course. But he couldn't because of the trauma.

Dealing with Isabella would also mean being reminded of Antonella. That's rough...

Dealing with criminals etc. is a completely different compartment.

It somehow seems as if Isabella doesn't mind. That's the strange bit there, not the MC's personality. But on the other hand, she basically didn't grow up with a father (or a mother).

he's this fascist pig who abuses his authority
Huh? Where did that come from???

He almost killed a guy for smoking weed and running from law enforcement. MC thinks since he has a badge he can do whatever he wants.
That guy broke the law. Twice.

Perhaps the MC overreacted, but I don't see facism here.

But at this point, the word "facism" has been abused so much, it has become practically meaningless. All while the real facists go unnoticed...

Thank you for not taking five minutes to think and confirming exactly the behaviour I said in my post about the inflationary use of terms you don't understand. :)

?

And you quoting me exactly why?

I admit that I digressed a bit in my post, but I don't think I made any false statements.
This game is fiction, japan also allied itself with these powers during an ensuing conflict implying a tasid approval for these tendencies. Though their system of government before MacArthur could be favorably compared to fascism and the cultural ghost or meme of a permissive attitude toward it likely persist in the nations collective unconscious.

This game gives me Summer's Gone flashbacks, and it has all the same issues. Beautiful renders let down by poor storytelling. I'm going to be harsh here because I think the developer does have talent, but they're making some elementary mistakes on the writing side that are letting their game down.

Front-loading your game with backstory is a serious no-no, especially when it drags on and on like this. It takes far too long for the MC to reveal his goal, and then we're given no indication of how he plans to carry it out. A story like this should have a protagonist with a clear goal and some ideas on how to pursue it. Then you throw challenges in his wake and have him overcome them. As of v0.042 we've just been given massive dumps of backstory. This kind of thing kills forward momentum in a story. Nothing is happening. A story needs things to happen in it. You need to have events or people are going to get bored.

This game also has a case of what I've come to call "bitch MC syndrome". The MC should be the main character - the one who has goals, makes plans, takes actions, and otherwise drives the story forward. Instead this guy spends his entire time pining for a girl who ran off on him decades ago while getting pushed around by multiple female characters. If that's your fetish then all power to you, but it does not make for an endearing protagonist. An MC should be making decisions and taking actions to progress the story. But instead we get a guy who spends the first chapter asleep, then does nothing, then gets yelled at, then falls into a pool and has to be saved, then does more nothing. He is almost entirely passive. This is the exact opposite of what a main character should be.

I know someone will cry "but things are happening! they're developing characters!". Character development is not a substitute for story. Character development should happen within the context of story events. So far it's just been people in rooms having conversations with little to no forward progression. It takes much too long to find out what the MC's goal is and by that point all his pining and being bullied turned me off so much that I could not care. An audience will rally behind an MC with a clearly defined goal and a plan for pursuing that goal. Then when you throw obstacles in his path the audience will root for him. But I don't want to root for this guy. I don't want to be him and that is fatal for an MC. Remember writers, the MC is the player, not you. MC's are player surrogates, and if the player doesn't like your MC then why would they want to continue playing your game as him?

Perhaps it's not too late to salvage this MC but it would require substantial reworking of the initial chapters. Trim down the flashbacks and feed them out gradually as the MC is taking action to pursue his clearly articulated goal. Give us the goal first then motivation. And for christ's sake, don't have your MC be bullied by every other character; pass out for no reason; or otherwise display constant weakness. Weak characters aren't deep and they certainly aren't attractive to players. You can have a character be sympathetic without them coming off like a complete pussy. Make your MC the kind of character people would want to be, an aspirational figure. Strength is desirable; weakness is not.

Yes, I would also like to see some of these same issues tweaked in future episodes. I don't want to give up on this game because most of the women are insanely hot and the renders are all outstanding. I didn't like the original girl at all and I wished my MC never got involved with her. And why does she have so much body hair in some shots? Am I hooking up with a lycanthrope? I keep hoping she never returns from her wolf pack friends in the forest because the present day women are far superior and less furry.

I spent a good bit of time in game wondering: why in the hell are so many characters furious at my MC? No one ever smiles either. I understand the usual porn game trope of...why did you run out on me tenant/roommate, but some of these ladies in household always seem to be either right in the middle of a rage or just on the verge of it. Often this happens several times within one conversation. One moment they like me, then next sentence they utterly despise me, then suddenly everything calm again (rinse/repeat). What do you crazy bitches want me to say that won't set you off?
Lisa you're tearing me apart!
The asian chick is such a breath of fresh air because she is peaceful at least.

I was also confused when the ginger cryptically asked me to make a critical choice about doing something for her or supporting her against her sister or whatever. It seems like big decision, but at the time I had no idea what exactly I was agreeing to do and why. As a player, I just met everyone in this household 5 minutes ago and now I am already supposed to choose sides? I guess it was there to branch off the relationships, but it seems a tad early in story to be doing that.
As cantankerous as the ginger is, goddamn she looks good so I guess I'm stuck getting yelled out until her tsundere phase cools off or I get fed up, put her over my knee, and spank her freckled bottom raw.

All that said, I still liked the game overall. I was just puzzled much of the time.

Hello, Game Developer. I can't support you right now (Lack of funds), but I do want to thank you for your efforts. This is one of the best visual novel games I've ever played. And I hope that this game becomes so popular that it even eclipses games like being a dik.

Man does this story hit harder than it should at times. Given the start screen theme I genuinely thought "hey, here's a fun story with a bit of reality mixed in", but to turn the MC into a potentially recovering alcoholic and drug addict? And to include those themes on top of being shot? I'm still recovering from the whiplash of what I just experienced.

Can't wait to see the rest of the story unfold!

Is this Kinetic, where your choices do not matter with the story progressing as it was intended, or Virtual where your choices matter and do you have options to not include some of these tags, or are they unavoidable?
