Way more so than any other thread I read on the site. And they're almost all pages of comments critical of the game/development. Most the comments ...

The messages that get removed add nothing to the conversation or thread topic. Most likely they are something that has been said a thousand times before. Moderators, through experience, recognize such posts and know when they will lead to flame wars in the thread so try to stop them before they happen as they add no value. If you feel nostalgic about such posts, just go back a few pages and relive the glory days of pointless hateful postings if that's the sort of thing you enjoy. A few words get changed here and there but they amount to the same thing. "I'm mAd *pout* "You're a sCamm3r *stick out tongue*" It's all been said before ad-nauseum.
As for Komi's claim that most people support him, I kinda believe it. Most of the negative comments came, in the majority, from a handful of haters that made repetitious posts and patted each other on the back when they made disparaging comments. All you have to do is go back to messages in support of Komi and look for the facepalm reactions or the negative posts with positive reactions. Pretty much the same group of people for all of them.
Most people who support Komi do not post in here because they know that 9 times out of 10 they will just be called a shill or white knight or whatever or they are just patiently waiting for the next release and feel they have nothing to add to the conversation.
As for your conclusion that people are giving up which is causing the thread to slow down, it doesn't ring true. The reason that it flared up for a while is because Komi announced that he was going to release content so people got more involved. Then the delays caused more negative input which sparked even more responses. Now that the release is "old news" activity has dropped back to pre-announcement rates with the majority of posts being people asking about the INC patch, save files and compressed version requests.
In the end, it boils down to maturity level and amount of patience. Those who have it usually stay silent while patiently waiting and playing some other games to pass the time while those who don't have it scream the loudest that they are upset that they aren't getting immediate gratification.
And yes, I'm guessing this post may disappear like many other posts have before. Such is life.
