It is true that often fantasy stories tend to focus a little too much on the customs of different races now that I think about it, expecially considering that they are similar in all fantasy settings. I have to disagree that humanity (or the main race of focus of that story) is the heart of a tale though, as there are some very good stories that focus on different races, often on the union of them, even though the "overcome our differences" bit is also kind of overplayed at this point.
