True, I borrow this FAQ for my signature, can I?

Anyway, it has to be said that after changing the music, Leap of Faith was reinstated in the Steam catalog and everything went fine in the end.
I basically screenshot a portion of a patreon post 'cause it seems like it should be shared. I don't think he'd mind, and I know he's talked to multiple developers about his situation.

And yea, as you might guess from my sig, I followed that pretty closely.

Or the easier alternative.. Don't worry about audio.
(This is in no way a knock against My Dorm, but this is just in general)

I know people will complain of "no sound no music blah blah".. but don't care. Yea I'm pushing a bit of a personal preference point, but I play/read all of these kinds of things with the audio off, and its not because of privacy or whatever. To me the licensing of music isn't worth it.
While I understand authors' ideas and desires to create these kind of projects and add audio for the immersion, honestly its the writing and the story that make it or break it for me.

Most of the projects who have bothered with sound effects, voice, music, either its such crap that its not worth having, or its too "overdone" and fake (mostly referring to sound effects and voice) and just detracts from enjoyment of the stories. Random instrumental mood & "elevator music" aside, what serves as "popular" music for the last 20+ years can mostly go in the trash as far as Im concerned, and thats usually the type of music most authors pick.

For something "in development", if an author does desire to go the voice route especially, do it at the end, do it as a special bonus, otherwise its all a waste of time and money; especially before completion of the main aspect of the story.
Projects where they bother to get lines voiced even before their entire script is done and the game is effectively finished I see as a production/planning problem, especially when "remasters" are a common occurrence.

Now with the advent of auto-generated content, If it gets to the point of making "original" audio where then licensing isn't a concern, fits the atmosphere and scope needed, then fine. Probably sample it for about 30 seconds and then still turn it off.

your logic makes sense but isn't really future proof if he already looks like hes in his late 30s early 40s imagine what he will actually look like when he hits 40
When he hits 40, he'll look like a 2012 Carl Reiner. Of course, with long hair and a massive, wrinkly erection.

I wonder if pouring bleach in your ears will make its way to the brain and delete mental images.

I think it IS future-proof.
Take me as an example. I was mistaken for 18 when I was just 14... Not once but in general.
After passing my 30s up to the end of it I got mistaken for 20 to 25 at max...
My father was mistaken for somewhat around 60, no one expected him to be close to 80 and retired, my grandfather died at 102 and looked better and fitter than most people in their 60s do...

Just be careful about your music sources before you go Steam ... this is from Drifty, whose game Leap of Faith was one of the first casualties of the musicopolypse ...

I go for CC0 licenses in the music I use because I don't want legal problems about it. There is some great music out there with CC0 license. Sometimes it's hard to find it, but it exists.

I've played all my AVNs without audio (I prefer listening to my playlist), and biased as I was, I released v.0.1 with very little music and sfx. There were some complaints about it and some reviews based on the lack of sound.

I never will do a voice-over for My Dorm. I think it detracts from the game. Imagine Norah, for example. A player perhaps has imagined her voice and the voice actress has a totally different tone/pitch. It could ruin the game for him, so I think the voice acting should be done from the start, with team actors that will be available during the whole development process, or not done at all. Voice acting the MC is a great No-No.

I now think music and some sound effects can add to the game if not overused. There have been several players that asked for the name of specific songs used in My Dorm, to the point I made a channel in Discord to have all of them available.

Careful with the CC0 license. I used one such thing in a video I made for YT years ago. Years later I got a Copyright citation because of it. I still had proof of the CC0 license I send it, thinking that's it... It wasn't. The music author had sold the fucking thing. It was no longer CC0 and they were claiming ownership of the video. I went into the video, removed the audio, thinking, what a crock of shit, and that it was done now...
It wasn't. I kept getting flagged even if the movie was silent, because the fucking song was still in the video.
So, in the end I had to delete the video. It was either that, or lose ownership of it. BTW, they were not interested in a license deal, they had me on the ropes and they knew it. In the meantime Google cancelled my AdSense account because of it. There went my 45 cents... and any future revenue.

So, be aware of that. I don't really know how you can protect yourself in that case. It is a rather ingenious trap if you think about it, they collect a bunch of people using the music for free, sell it to a rights collection company for a bunch of money, then disappear, or change their name. Poof. And now everyone is fucked and either have to pay whatever the new owner wants or lose the work made with the "free music". I would recommend talking with a lawyer. Maybe having a contract with the music author, or something...

If I ever do anything media related, I won't use music or sounds of any kind. But, that's me. I hope you have better luck and not get involved with those scammers, or you are smarter than me.

Peace :(

TropecitaGames if you'll be putting this on Steam at any stage, you can't have any minors in the game AT ALL. It doesn't matter if they're never sexualized or naked or anything. If you try to submit an adult porn game with a minor in it, the game will get an instant permaban.

I mention this because some games I've played and am still playing have the players children in the game, which is often very nice and sweet. But is sadly a death sentence to getting the game on Steam.

Oh, shit! I didn't think about the possibility of people changing the licenses in their songs or selling the rights. I have printed (pdf) the license for all the music I use and most of them have the disclaimer marked in red:

I guess I'm covered by now (at least while My Dorm is a little known game), but I think it's better to speak to a lawyer.

That's good to know, thanks, as there is a flashback image (during Simone's date) where the girls appear as kids. I guess I'll remove that image if/when I try to put this on Steam.
It also changes some renders I thought for the epilogue and a whole scene with a flashback to the MC's high school time and that one should be completely removed (that scene was why I bought Scarlett's model, as she comes in teen and young adult versions).
I guess there will be My Dorm (real version) and My Dorm (Steam version).

IANAL, but it is my understanding that licensing terms, even FOS ones like Creative Commons and GNU GPL/LGPL, are not considered "in perpetuity" unless they explicitly state that they are, in which case your FOS licensing rights would be "grandfathered" even if the licensed creative work was subsequently sold to a commercial entity and commercially licensed. I think if you were challenged in that instance, you would prevail, but it would certainly be a hassle to get to that point.

Just my $0.02...

That license is rather different from the one that I had years ago, especially that clause that the licensor couldn't change the license. It was probably added because of cases like mine.

Good. Really Good.

About the Steam and children. Well, erring on the side of caution and not giving one mm to pedophiles, however stupid it may seem, it is actually a good thing. Yes, it will be a rather strange version of My Dorm if all that needs to be cut, but, I feel a chill on my back just thinking of someone pausing the game on such an image to masturbate or worse.

Fuck, I think I just ruined my own day.

Peace :(

If it's any consolation, I'm pretty sure anyone with an unhealthy interest in children like that, won't be playing a game focused on adults. And any who would do what you thought, could and would with any piece of media that has a child in it, regardless of the piece of medias sexual content or lack thereof.

I for one hope games with no intentions on Steam continue to have child characters in appropriate situations in adult games.
Our daughter in The Fiery Scion is a great example I think.

I plan on doing it once it's finished. I should research a lot about the hows and whats (the docs in your signature look great as a starting point, thanks). Luckily, there is still a long way to go before it's finished.
okay brother before I continue I need to make sure I can be nice to her without her getting the wrong idea right

I'm only interested in my mom but I don't want to give this girl the wrong idea

Wow, Debbie ! admirative, you are stunned by her beauty, she will notice, (guess that is the Debbie path, I choose that one)
Not bad, for anyone who likes muscular girls, : you are being polite and telling her that you are not interested , since she is muscular, (you are implying that you don't like muscular girls) so that would be the diplomatic turn down. (maybe you best choice)

Right now, those choices only grant positive or negative points to her, and don't open or close any path. Down the road, there will be a choice that will open her path (if you have enough positive points). In this case, the first choice gives positives and the second one negatives.
