Seriously though, that is why this all stings so much. This is one of my favorite Renpy games.
Agreed, great game and one of my favorites. I think this update will come out towards the end of the year (much delayed) and will probably be the last one. Dev has unfortunately been getting slower at creating updates as the gravy train fattens him up, I think it is a rarely escapable consequence of success in the adult VN market.

Such is life, I enjoyed what was released so far and hope my guess is right on this patch at least releasing (hopefully sooner than I guess) and wrong on it being the last update but we'll see.

That may or may not be the case. But its why some of my favorite games are ones where the dev makes little to no money, and is just chugging it out to share because he likes doing it.

Some folks can definitely keep chugging along even when the $$ roll in but for whatever reason I feel like adult games can have the opposite effect when they start to be successful.

But anyway yeah fair enough and I am probably just getting a little antsy on the update. When we hadn't heard from him I was fine to wait but him posting on Patreon and Itch in like June or July that the update was "almost ready" and then having a month pass by is a little annoying. Oh well, guess I'll go back into hibernation on this one and just be pleasantly surprised when the update comes out rather than actively monitoring for it at this point.

This dude is making nearly $3.3k a month "working" on this game. its insane to be making this much for just a "side" project. you'd at least feel like you owe it to your supporters to be more frequent with the updates.

what`s the main project?
He meant it is not his job, so something he is doing on the "side".

BTW that is more money than most people make working full time with a university degree. (or about the same)

Imagine working in a customer service or hard labour job, only to make less money than a dude who works on a porn game on and off.

I do NOT want to defend farmguy, but this needs context.

For example, In as a whole the median salary was 3155 EUR in 2023 that was around 3413 USD in 2023. This salary was not for college or university graduates but for the whole of society. If you want to play around with educational level filtering here is a for that. In the it was even more in 2023, about 5327 USD pre tax.

Also, depending on where he lives in the world. The Patreon support is likely counted as normal income in most places around the world. Therefore subject to normal taxation practices.

All in all: No he's likely is not making more with this, than the average university graduate. At least in the western part of the world.

Lets not aim at the wrong argument here. The point is that this silly little Renpy game is earning them quite a pretty penny just to sit on it doing nothing for months (a year of just Dev logs don't count). this isn't about median salaries and household incomes for full time employment.

I was typing a comment but yours is much better than what I had written.

So instead Ill share a fun number of minimum hours worked since last release. I calculated a number for a different game thats stalled with no updates and high patreon income, should be fun to do again.

Last release was April, 2024. Assuming FarmGuy worked 4 hrs a week (2 hrs on Saturday and Sunday) since last update, we'd have around 250 hours (exluded holidays and possible vacations, rounded down) worth of work split between coding, modeling, writing, and bugfixing.

I cannot believe it takes that long, large revamp update or not, to make an update. Again, this is with an insultingly low amount of work per week on what should be a passion project. Sloth seems to be greater than all, even lust and greed, here.

I agree! For the amount of visible work he is putting in the payout is outrageous.

But regardless, I had to point out the context! Simply because I see people going into doom loops more and more: Everything is fucked, even a boob drawer is making more than me, my university diploma is not worth shit, etc, etc...

I don't know about other Europe countries but in the UK, $3.3K is around £2.4K a month (~30K a year), with a uni degree in STEM, you are LUCKY if you get that amount for the first two years on the job.
Minimum wage, that is to say, hard labour/dead end jobs, pay you around £2K a month (£24K a year). (all figures pre tax)

So at least he makes more than the average sod and the fresh meat out the college, working 36 hours a week.

All in all, I think he fell down the same well most other devs fell in, that is, he saw how easy it is to milk money, and he jumped in.
It is a shame, it was really promising.

My information on the UK salary wise is rather limited and what I found now, is even more contradictory. On one hand I see which tells me that everything hunky-dory, and on the other hand tells me doom and gloom. So I will simply accept what you said.

I'm still working on the update, it's a very big update, maybe with more content than the last 3 patches combined, with more than 7k new images and almost 1 hour of big animations, but I'm doing the final touches now! People on my discord can see it, as I try to post sneak-peeks every time I get a chance or I have something cool to share.
Just talking about the numbers - assuming their numbers are accurate, and going off your 4 hrs/week figure, I'd say that 7k images and 1 hour animation is good for 250 hours work. I'm not an artist/modeller/writer so I can't accurately predict how long 7k images would take to make. But I'd maybe triple it (~1000 hours) for all of the content described. That would seem a reasonable amount of effort per month for this big update.

Of course, I'd probably expect/want more than 250 hours work for a Patreon earning that much money. But if it is a large update (7k+ images), I can understand that it took over a year. I'm not a Patreon of any AVN's because of the inconsistency in any dev's schedule. If I can, I prefer to buy the game outright on itch/steam for the content they've already made, hoping they'll finish it or at least get a few updates.

If I was a dev, I'd want to do a release every few months, at least. Just to keep people interested. But I can understand that just doing a release is a fair amount of prep work. It requires notices on various platforms, upload, testing, and monitoring a release for bugs. If you get into a monthly release schedule, prep work can take up a relative large percentage of work done every month. So larger, singular releases can cut back on the release stress.
