Night of Revenge has plenty of developer jank lying around:
- Some weapons don't scale in attributes they say they do, making them garbage.
- Poor weapon balance on the heavy and slow side.
- Overall balance of the experience is so poor that players often find the game vastly too easy and have to use mods to really feel how fun this game could have been with greater attention to balance.
- A chance for "trick weapons" (mostly staff) to freeze the player in place if attack is spammed rapidly, softlocking if not attacked.
- Soft-locks happen when an enemy grabs you that has no animations for that scenario; this is only applicable to the Merman boss at the top right of the sunken valley.
- Soft-locks happen any time an enemy grabs the player on an unstable moving surface like a bridge, prone to happening on the leftmost bridge with the Merman and mimic in the sunken valley.
- Some entries in your book for enemies remain incomplete despite interacting with everything as much as possible.
- Options in some menus and dialogue are never selectable.
- Aradia's Status in the pause screen never changes from "normal".
- Some animations that would reasonably give Aradia her "stained" set of portraits near her health bar and in the pause screen don't.
- Costumes are "illusory", which is a nice way to say the appearances don't carry into sex or game-over scenes because visual assets did not account for costumes to be added for those later.
- Holes in levels from slightly-off placement of assets.
- The underground graveyard next to the ranch was clearly an afterthought rushed due to time constraints - a tiny little square room with densely packed treasure placement and a couple new enemies though not many enemies overall.
- In the most recent upload of the game particle overlay animations are frozen both on title screen and whenever they appear in levels.
- Some NPC sex anims are not repeatably visible when they are a good fit for the gallery. Apply this to specific game-overs too.
NoR is a good game despite these flaws but could have been more. D-Lis really had to rush to put the game out, I can see he was struggling with managing his time. He did get married during development so he has more to deal with. The game probably does not have sufficient playtesters reporting back, likely because the dev's primary communication channels are Japanese language only.
The option to talk to Vendetta that is never highlighted was likely an access point to travel to a DLC area, similar to how his earlier game Bullet Requiem got an additional area added after the final boss. There may yet be a DLC added, which also enables further modding of the game by having more stuff to replace.
That said, I have to congratulate D-Lis on his art becoming so much stronger. The difference in art quality between Bullet Requiem and Night of Revenge is stunning.
