Dev Diary 100

Hello all, TD here.

It’s been a weird couple of weeks, but let’s first get the numbers out of the way. Currently Chapter4Up6 sits at 2,446 static images, 92 animations, and 51,544 words.

That totals out to 96 statics, 15 animations, and 3,194 words added to the script since our last dev diary.

Now, the elephant in the room: *we will be releasing everything up to the exhibition proper as its own update.*

Quite frankly, while I want desperately for you guys to play the entire day, we could use the hit of motivation that a release provides. We’ve both been sick over these past three weeks, but even accounting for that, we have been noticeably dragging our feet to a finish line that isn’t anywhere close. It’s a malaise that will inevitably eat into the remaining portion of the update, both leading us to cut corners and take the turns we do take more slowly. I’ve fed myself a heap of copium these past two weeks that this wouldn’t be the case and that we would rally through, but I feel it in my bones. We need the mental refresh from having our work seen.

I know we’re going against the majority result with this, but thank you for your input in the decision. Your kind, thoughtful comments not only helped us see the writing on the wall through a litany pros and cons, but there was a few times where I teared up from the expressions of unconditional support regardless our decision. It sounds corny, but it helped me shift my perspective and see that, no matter how we piece it out, once Chapter 4 is done… it’s done. It’ll be judged on its entirety, not by the arbitrary lines I draw in the sand. It’s a conclusion I arrived at early on in Chapter 3 when we had to break up the Carnation photo shoots, but it was time for a reminder.

Thanks, guys. For both your understanding and investment into us.

Going forward, once update 6 is in your hands, our goal will be to get the remaining portion of the exhibition 3 out in three to four months. We’ve always refrained from putting an explicit time frame on an update, but… fuck it, let’s see how it goes. Ironically, a little constraint might be beneficial for the creative process.

This must’ve been tough for the devs with sickness and everything, and I’m just glad they chose to prioritize their interest.

I'm very happy the devs decided to go the early update route. Anyone that doesn't see how this is better for the game overall is not thinking clearly, devs get more money, they won't be stressed out thinking about time when working on the rest of the exhibition, and they get to gather some much deserved feedback too.

Also, I feel like most of us will agree TD and Gil have earned our trust and they deliver when it comes to giving us a quality product.

I'm super looking forward to playing this update whenever it releases, I'm guessing it'll be mid-late September? Silksong AND Pale Carnations? September is shaping up to be a great month :sneaky:

I agree with you both, and I think they made the right choice for them, for the game and for us players as well.

If the decision is to split the update, I would suggest to add a pause in the storytelling at the end of this update. Something like Katleen, who says: «After this challenge let's take a break, so the girls will regain strenght for the rest of the night.» In this way the split will be more natural and you could add a recap, in the form of a brief dialogue at the begining of the second half of the exibition; if a recap will be needed.
What do you think TD1900?

I am a little letdown that didn't wait till full exhibition, would of like the whole thing. But I understand the dev's view. I know I can wait, but that may be too long.

I will say though, I can't wait to see the complaining about how there isn't enough sexual content, short update, that was it, and other things since it is just the pre exhibition part for the most part and that isn't really exciting.

Definitely a shocking dev diary: I make it only 3014 words added since the last diary (from 48530 to 51544), not 3194 as reported! But no sense getting bent out of shape over it, we should keep our eye on the big picture. :p

By my math the devs have averaged roughly 32 static images, 5.0 animations and 1005 words per week since the last diary (1065 words/week if we go with 3194 words added). Overall TD and GIL are averaging 77 statics, 2.9 animations, and 1618 words per week since work on Chapter 4 Update 6 officially began. Here are the charts for Week 32:

The increased animation pace has (unsurprisingly) continued. But obviously the big news is that the update will be split and released in two portions. That's not the outcome I was hoping for, though I'll admit it was the one I was expecting given TD and GIL seemed to be going a little stir crazy. Either way, I trust them to make the best decision and hopefully the shorter cycle will pay some dividends for everyone. I guess we'll see for ourselves soon enough.

Though I'm not sure exactly how soon. TD didn't give a timeline for the release of Part 6, so presumably there's still a little work to be done on it. I doubt there's that much left, but we probably shouldn't be expecting the release until mid-September even if wrap-up and testing go smoothly. As for the newly minted Part 7, if the goal is to complete it in four months that suggests the Exhibition is considerably less complicated than the free-roam portion. I'll be curious to see how that works in practice whenever we finally get there.

I was always in the "let them cook" camp, but after reading TD's thoughts, it seems the 6-9 month upate cycle is the way to go. Such a huge update was always an ambitious undertaking, and respect to the devs for recognizing their own limits. Burnout is a bitch, and it would be a shame to half ass and rush development due to fatigue so close to the finish line.

I think I'm speaking for everyone when I say that we appreciate the transparency and the engagement, especially since most devs make promises they can't keep and underdeliver, or get burned out halfway through because they can't pace themselves. As always, can't wait for the update.

Hi!
I am sure there will be complainers from the "wait" camp, but I am also pretty sure these guys would also complain no matter what. They simply overlook that we, thanks to ename144 for his stat blocks, sit comfortably at a point where with one exception all former updates were artwise, around 2.500 stills, several dozen animations. This is NOT a hasty mini-update pushed out because time is burning on the fingers we can see from some other developers, but an update of the size TD and GIL constantly deliver. I am sure it will be tasty!

I am also happy that the release comes now because it is the better solution for the game development. As I stated before during the discussion "be consistent, be trustworthy, keep your expected intervall" will win in the long run.

This update is already close to 8 months in development, so I think releasing it in two parts is a good call. Also, we have to keep in mind that we don't even have a hint of a release date yet, which means that the development time could go up to 9 months (hopefully no more).

TD and GIL have previously said that they wanted to satisfy all kind of players on this game day and that takes time. So it's not surprising that game day could take a full year of development, or even a little more. But at least they'll show us everything they've planned, and by splitting the update, there won't be as much pressure on them as if they were releasing the update in full, and I hope that will help in other ways as well :)

P.S. I wonder how many times Edwin can cum in one day and whether it will be a problem? Although, we have all these aphrodisiacs, so it's a solvable "problem" :sneaky:

Whatever keeps the devs happy and willing to work, I understand that wating could do more damage than good even when I believe this game it's worth waiting for. I know I'll be wating more even when the update drops beacuse that's how I enjoy the games so I hope everyone else enjoys it to their hearts content and we'll read each others experiences later.
