I'm so happy to hear that you like my demo! I can understand the frustration behind a game being leaked, and others getting access to an early access game which only the higher-tier patrons should be entitled to. I find that while there is no denying that a game will be leaked, this shouldn't dis-entitle higher-tier patrons from accessing the early-access game... I see the issue through the lens of this weird and perhaps illogical analogy: Say if I was a movie producer, and I was to release a movie to the cinemas, should I by reason of knowing that other people may stream or torrent the movie, stop charging people to go to the cinemas to see my movie and rely on people donating to me on the basis that they support my work? While a game is not synonymous with a movie... I find it that I'm not yet in the financial position to make the risk of loosing the market of people who want to be a higher-tier patron just to access my game earlier, as cynical and capitalistic as it may seem ~
With that said however, I think giving exclusive polls to your higher donation tiers, walkthroughs, previews and exclusive channel access inside discord might be the things that make higher donation tiers feel less cheated , and I will go about my way implementing that ^_^
Thanks for your feedback <3
Manic~
I only praised it because you did a great job , IMO. Nothing more, nothing less ^^
With that said, I really don't agree with your analogy, and the motive is quite clear: You're not a movie producer. And, most importantly, you're not making a commercial product (like a film is).
That's why I started my prior explanation with a simple truth: Patronage is a donation. When I contribute to your project, I do it in good faith. You do not have to deliver anything after that. And I won't be able to even ask for a refund. See where this is going?
Key word: donation.
Patreon is about financially helping (emphasis here) the artist. Not buying from him. And what you (and a lot of other content creators out there) are doing is, simply put, selling early access.
When, IMHO, you should actually prioritize making the whole content production process fun to your patrons. Stream in Picarto daily. Post a lot of things in your Patreon page and Discord. Etc.
"Create" a great community around your game production for your patrons.
I believe most patrons out there are after the whole "entertainment package" about your production process, and not just about the game per se.
Again, I ask you to take a look at how Dark Cookie is doing and remind you that he has NEVER (and I should know since I've been a higher tier patron of his from the very beginning) put any of his actual game behind any paywall.
IMO, it's a mere myth that you need that to have financial success in Patreon.
You just need a great project and to provide great entertainment while creating your project.
The rest naturally follows.
But, then again, it's your project. So do what you feel its best.
I just gave you my two cents on the subject. Keep putting content out, and I'll become a patron of yours, probably. Though, if I have to wait a lot at a lower tier, and the game leaks, I wouldn't be surprised if I dropped my patronage all together eventually.
Because, as I explained earlier, I'm not buying access to an unfinished product.
Instead, I just donated some funds in good faith to an artist. The least I would expect is access to your game. Having to go through piracy channels in order to do so, even though I'm donating, is a big, no, HUGE, no-no to me.
And that's why I posted this.
Cheers, and keep up the excellent work. ^^
