One wrong playthrough of the shower scene seems to have corrupted my game. Now, even if I start a new game from scratch and follow the directions in the walkthrough, I get Game Over at dinner no matter what.

edit: Never mind, changing the character names seems to have fixed it.

I'm having this same issue I can't make it past the first dinner without a game over now.

Delete all the old content including all your old saves and the "persistent" file. Your old saves may even still show up in game but you should be able to start a new game without any issues.
