That's really not about perfectionism but about getting all the necessary rights and authorisations so that I don't get kicked from Steam when I get there or end up with a lawsuit on my ass.
That's a wholly different matter, then, TBH. I know a few games who are stuck in limbo because the dev can't find the "perfect music" for the scenes, which... sucks.

I know them too, and if you're talking about the same game that I'm thinking about, I'll tell you that we will never see our MC getting laid.

Anyway, I have a smart advice for him/her/it/them: muted game and let the player listen to his/her/their favourite spotify/youtube playlist while playing.

Sorry, I was more active here at the beginning and haven't posted for a while in this thread.

I most certanly don't speak for everybody, but I wanted to say that I've played a lot of the games here on this site and there is none...really none...in which I have the music turned on. I usually even turn the sound effects off too.

People have different taste....you can't please everyone and for me especially with sound that is a problem.
If something doesn't sound like I would have wanted...it quickly takes me out of it and makes it annoying.

Thats why I'm grateful if some Dev adds voice over, that there is a (individual) mute button too.

Yes, for people the taste in girls is very different too, but usually you have a choice of girls and you pick your favorite.

With music and sound...you usually don't get a choice...there is only that one or the option to turn it off alltogether.

I often do the same, to be honest.
But there is a significant demand for music. I actually have more complaints about the lack of music than about the lack of animations. I cannot ignore that.
And it's always better to have music, with the option to mute it than to have nothing.

I'm curios and feel free to ignore my question if you don't want to answer, but how much do you have to spend on licenses and are there any "decent" providers for music that you can use? By that I mean providers that have fair conditions from an indie dev's point of view. From the outside, I always have the impression that music licenses are a rip-off.

20 to 50 dollars per track so far.
The vast majority of artists I contacted didn't even reply. From the few who did, a couple of them asked for astronomic prices, in the 500 to 600 dollar price tag per track. A couple of others were more reasonable, and I struck a deal with them.

To my knowledge, there is no licensing platform that allows porn, erotica, mature or even "inappropriate" content. So there are no "fair conditions" as there are no conditions at all.

Direct deals with the artists are the only way. So I'm using these platforms (mainly Pixabay and Jamendo) to find tracks and then try to contact the artists directly. Which is not always possible.

Is music overpriced?
I guess that depends on the context.
Making music is hard work and takes time. And work deserves to be rewarded.
But for an indie dev like me, 500 dollars for a single track that won't even be crafted on purpose for the game is way overpriced.
But it's not if you are working on a million-dollar project.

Thank you for answering, The Naughty Captain. I wouldn't have blamed you if you didn't wanted to tell which costs are behind your project. But it filled many blanks I had about working on such projects. I've always thought that music might be the most expensive part in making AVN.

I can understand musicians want to earn fair money with their work and they've the right to do so. From my POV it's just not helpful for the musicians if they're making prices like this. I don't get their calculations. It's better to make 10 deals about one hundred Dollars instead of turning 30 offers down to get one 500 Dollars deal. Sure, as a musician you have to see your own work and what you think it's worth it. But they should also known their music is just a background and not the main part.

I don't understand why you devs don't use classical music. You can find tons of public domain and copyright free classical music sheet, scores and tracks you can use however you want without asking anyone.

Because while the tunes might be in the public domain, the orchestration is not.

Not even accounting that it doesn't always fit with the mood of the game.

You think I'm a retard who doesn't know anything about copyright laws, do you?

I'm giving up. Suit yourselves.

In my opinion, if you work with Daz, the most expensive part is the hardware.
A decent rendering station for a Full HD result costs from 7 to 10k euros. and it will last from 2 to 4 years if you are lucky.
Number 2 would most likely be the assets that you will use to build your sets and characters. Especially if you kitbash.

It is expensive.

Classical music is actually some of the most dangerous to use. If you use Royal Philarmonic Orchestra or Sydney Symphony Orchestra recordings for example you can get in pretty deep shit.

The compositions might be public domain, but the recordings are not. You need to understand the difference between C copyright, which covers the composition, and P copyright, which covers the recordings. They are separate things, and you need to address both. C copyright lasts (iifc) 70 years past the life of the death of the composer (excepting certain works for hire which were never owned by an individual). But most recordings you would want to use are too new to have gone into the public domain, so unless you want to hire an orchestra to create a recording you own yourself....

Not quite - the orchestration (or the arrangement) isn't part of copyright law (don't get me started - it's absurd), it's the recording which is separate from the composition.

I don't think anyone said anything about your intellectual development, but your question certainly shows a level of ignorance on how copyright law works.
