It's much more focussed.
I would tentatively call it "better". Certainly much better render quality, and Lockheart makes much better use of music and sounds in this one. That being said, it's a different kind of game with a much narrower focus. There's only one LI, Petal, and not a lot of choices. It's also very focused on the relationship between MC and Petal and their exploration of what that relationship could be. There's very little of any larger story going on in this one. It still has that Lockheart blend of emotional and funny going on though!

Petal is the first of three VNs that complete a story arc. So effectively, this is the first of three chapters and as such is much more narrowly focused than Avalon. The writing is excellent and as the first third of the story it does an admiral job of setting the foundations, relationships, and by its end providing a pretty hot finale.

If I'm properly remembering who Chuck is, suspect that he will play an integral role in getting the rest of the family to open up to the changing dynamic, possibly helping get his sister on board. He isn't simply a non sequitur, but probably part of the catalyst.
