I must admit, I don't really understand the terms OC and real characters. If you don't mind could you clarify that?
Then I hope to be able to answer your question

OC = original character, so a character not from the movies/books etc
real character = basically the inverse, so using an existing character from the franchise

It is a mix, with most characters being OC, as we know (I will follow the old legends universe timeline of the expanded universe) all of the "existing" characters are occupied by their own agendas at the moment. Well more or less
But the MC will have opportunities to encounter some of those legendary characters along the way

ANd no, I do not intend to devolve this in some I want to nail Leia story

yeah, but you know he has a family and day time job..those are not the perfect conditions for a developer but despite all of that he still works on it.
Project is definitely not dead, just slower. I am sure he will say something soon.
