The Chad is gay theory does indeed handily remove him from the romantic picture, but I'd say the reason it's the obvious choice is because it simultaneously explains why he is cheating on Sage... but also why he is so committed to remaining in a sexless relationship with her in the first place.

A "beard" doesn't always have to be for someone who's hiding being gay. Guys, this is an old discussion from the very beginning of this thread. The point was valid about the sexual assault, it was never added as a tag and it should have been. If Sage and Chad grew up together, I can see how they would become a couple before Chad really understood he was gay. But if Chad does like girls and just doesn't like Sage's type, why did they become a couple at all?
I don't think it can be as simple as "he was a jock even back then so he picked a hot girl," because in that case he would already be used to "faking" interest in Sage. He might be too tired to do to put in a good effort in Episode 3, but I don't think he would be as completely non-comprehending as he was presented.
Now maybe Sage was the one who instigated the relationship way back when and Chad went along; by the time he realized he didn't love her, he realized he needed her as cover. It's certainly possible, but it feels more complicated and I tend to favor the simplest explanations when possible.

Who said that Sage knows she's a beard? Ever seen stories about guys who seem like perfectly normal family men but who turn out to be child murdering pedophiles? The partner doesn't always know about their other half's hidden side, and the same could be happening here with Chad, albeit a lot less extreme than the previous example.
Bottom line, whatever it is that's going on, Chad is using Sage to hide something about himself and she's not helping him hide it.
