To your first point, this is more of a translation philosophical question than one of ability: is the goal of a translator to transcribe someone's work into a different language exactly as intended or adapted for the new audience?

I started off believing the former. But I think by the fiftieth "restrained an unprotected meat stick in the valley of her milk" and due to my work on Sadistic Maid, I became convinced that localization was probably better than straight translation for porn games. It's why none of the dialogue ever refers to the MC by name anymore. It's why Luna went from speaking in third-person a lot to doing it exclusively. It's why words that I know for a fact were not in the original Japanese, such as "cute and funny" are in this translation. As long as the idea of what was being said was mostly preserved, I decided to localize everything. In fact, the fact that I knew some people might disagree with localization is why I wrote the translation notes to begin with.

Given that, you and I both know that the "Villager" looks nothing like a villager and instead is a rip-off of shoutout to Haruhi Suzumiya. Members of the ganguro/gal/gyaru youth subculture are not Amazons. Undines are water spirits, not girls in swimsuits. And while Tsukineko is probably the best one of all, having that be the only Japanese name is pretty odd. This is why I decided that it would be better to change them to something more understanding for an English audience, even if that's not what the devs intended when they named them.

As for the pluralities, I dunno man. For one thing, Succubi appears in one hundred lines in the translation. Furthermore, the translation was designed around the length of the word Succubi - changing it requires new word wrapping that's not necessary for anything else. Finally, there is still no distinction between enemy types in the dialogue.

So, we're talking redesigning at least one variable if not more, sifting through the code to find the exact lines for the Succubus enemy specifically, changing them all and implementing new word wrapping... for what? The benefit of three percent of the lines? So each enemy has slightly more unique lines in a game of thousands. So that instead of referring to them all as Succubi, they have their own individual names? It's one thing when we're talking about who's speaking but it's another when discussing a group. I just don't feel like the effort needed to do this is worth the benefits.

You may disagree on both of these points, but I hope I did a good job of explaining my reasoning.

And with that, the thread has been updated with what should be the final version of the game. Thank you for all of your help,
Masterdragonson and sandsea_urchin. Your knowledge is why this translation no longer needs a Story and Recollection mode. Your efforts were so critical, that you're now immortalized in the window itself!

Hooray.PNG

Translating games is a hard business and college is piling up work on my end. So I might be hanging up the translation gloves for good with this. It took the efforts of at least four people to come to this day. Still don't think that sequel's getting translated anytime soon...

Thanks again, guys!

Hindsight can be a bitch sometimes o_O
Hopefully I won't be quoting you on that :sneaky:

You sure did. Thanks for that. And I'd tend to agree - better English is better, simple as that.
Either way, he who did the most work has the last say no matter what (y)

Sadly you'll face critics on all fronts :p Sometimes things are lost in translation which you can make note of but it is what it is. Other times something has a cultural influence that if you really want the "spirit" to be conveyed then you have to bend it a bit. I don't think there is really a right or wrong answer as it's situational and based off individual preferences... Most fan translations are gamers picking up games they enjoy and wanting to share that joy with others :D

Hopefully I won't be quoting you on that :sneaky:
I will probably eat that humble pie :giggle:

This says you're missing a file.
For whatever reason you either don't have or it can't find "Graphics\Characters\$サキュバス.png"
Check to see if that file exist, if it doesn't or looks like crap try extracting the game again using something like WinRar and Ctrl+E for language settings.
It worked with WinRAR, thanks a lot. There is currently no way of doing this with 7-zip, is there?

There probably is but I'm not sure if it's more convenient. Searching for 7-zip and Japanese Characters in Google brings up command line options, switching/emulating Japanese Locale, and some ads for competing software.

I need help pls, this error doesn't let me play the game, the graphics file is there i don't know why this happens.
Screenshot of file location would be nice. Does this happen if you run it using Locale-Emulator?

I'm assuming the System Language is Spanish. Is the game in like a User Folder with accents?
If you moved it somewhere simply like "C:\Games\" does it have any effect?

Screenshot of file location would be nice. Not that I don't trust you saying the file hasn't been mutilated but for whatever reason if it can't find the file well that is all that error message is saying.

What doesn't kill a Sayajin makes him stronger. But what kills a human kills him dead. Says Temperance Foresight, Hindsight-chan's onee-san.

I'd recommend providing the guys running into these problems, with an older scripts.rvdata. Sadly, there were too many changes that are liable to bake pie - we've seen that with _interpreter, and that was just one script among them all. That could make the haypile a tad smaller.
Not much I can do to help

I've been using 7sip since 4ever. I never had any issue (but the occasional .rar, ironically). Get a newer version, check your locales, is all.

I'm pretty sure it's just the file got corrupted since it commonly happens with Japanese File Names but if you want scripts I guess it couldn't hurt.

Here is a copy of the Japanese Version I did a light edit on to show off the Window_Message changer earlier. Everything else is de-facto off the shelf.
I didn't keep a pure backup of the original so yeah....

Well, I don't need it myself since I can pick bits & pieces.
I'm pretty sure it's just the file got corrupted
That's what I'm hoping for: another jp-impaired user.
In the worst-case scenario: it's another bug, and we can't reproduce it ourselves (unless we format c:/ or something :giggle:)

Anyway, they say too little to be of any help <HINT HINT>.
It does worry me that the issues swapped from /pictures to /characters, is all. That hints a script's at fault. And it does run fine for me - which is the most tantalazing part of a bugseeker's job OTL

Eh I've dealt with a few tech calls so I try to get an air for the situation. This is also why Game.rgss2a is nice since it wraps around these types of problems nicely but decrypting it is necessary for translation.

So far I've gathered from them.
  1. From their first post they know how to do screenshots, light picture editing, and are working off a Spanish PC. The Error Message itself says the system can't find a file.
  2. From their second post they can understand and follow basic instructions. However that doesn't verify that the file hasn't been corrupted.
  3. Downloaded Succubus_Maze_Ver.1.06_-_Final_English_Release.zip CRC32: 20282777 to see what it looks like seeing as this version came after all the work we had done. Might have been better as a rar file but opening it in WinRar and using Ctrl+E to change the Name Encoding from Default to Shift-JIS seems to display all the files properly.

  4. I went to that location to see if all the files were listed properly after extracting the archive. Looking over the other files in the Graphics Folder the sprite would probably be the first to cause problems since "$主人公.png" is the Main Character.

  5. I do have to keep in mind that I play Japanese Games so my system does have Unicode Fonts and I've dealt with these long enough I know when a file looks wonky. Though I am a little curious if the other link would work better since it is a rar file. https://f95zone.to/threads/succubus-maze-v1-06-final-jamming-software.74271/post-5134175

Nope, since you don't say where and when the crash ocurred.
I can tell at least tell you're using an old version. Download the newest version from page 1.

Kitto_464 darkness846 So I trust you guys have your issue resolved? Because we'll assume everything's perfect and we'll move on ('till Succubus Labyrinth ).
