At best, you could say the demo could have entered early access perhaps a year or so sooner because of the pandemic, but that has no bearing on the point that they gave an unrealistic development timeframe
AFTER it entered early access in 2021, a year after the pandemic began when vaccines became available when they launched in early access.
To be clear, I don't even blame them for missing that window. I never really expected a year was long enough, game development is hard work. But it's something I keep in mind every time a studio gives a general release timeframe, I tend to take them all with a grain of salt.
I say it's a very unreasonably high ask to renege on the terms of the game's early access some time after the fact when they've already collected most of the benefits and have decided they shouldn't be subject to the consequences.
