One of the problems we have is the colloquialisms that change even within the same language, but vary by region. I think it was an Ozzie I first heard utter the phrase "Well, I ain't here to fuck spiders". I have never heard an American use that phase,and it was the oddest way somebody's ever told me they weren't looking to waste time.

Yes, the translation programs have become better, but that is confined to a few major languages with rather fixed word order where there is a lot of improvement. Other languages on the most important list like German or Japanese, which are more flexible, the programs still translate with glaring errors in word order, lexicon and meaning. It "understands" phrases and ambiguous words much better, but then I have to try enter the whole sentence, not just a word in GT. It helps too that I see by myself that something doesn't fit there as it should.

A couple years ago, rubbish translations of even easy sentences were the norm, today you get something halfway useful, if very buggy, out of them. The programs sometimes get out fitting correct translations, but they suck big time with mood particles, multiple meaning words, pre- and suffixes (separable verbs are the death for the programs it seems) and anything that is not standard word order.. And even standard order is a mixed bag, languages with verb last order are really tough for the programs, going by what outrageous selections they do.In my language it's better then obviously in yours. Oh, I love this! When I started learning English, I learnt the UK English, but I only interacted with Americans, making my English a collage of both. Till today, Language or Translate asks me which English I'm writing. This let me know a lot of colloquialism, which gives great texture to interactions and are like a collectable that you can snatch, and you use, like I will be using "Ain't here to fuck spiders" from now on.
I'm so used by now that it will be strange to see it when the time comes. It is strange just to think about it now, like it is forbidden or desecrated holy soil.
